Re: Actinocyclus octonarius
Hi Wes, in this case you will have changed the objective's focus, right? This is not a good method as the objectie is not used as intended. Bob What I did was to make sure the view from the photoport is parfocal with that of the eyepieces of the binocular head. Then I either try afocal projection, ...

Re: Actinocyclus octonarius
Thanks Wes An eyepiece is designed to send a virtual image that needs a lens (afocal or an eye) to convert it into a real one. By raising the eyepiece it produces instead a real image that can then be projected directly onto the camera sensor. This is to try to improve sharpness and detail (closer ...

. Thanks MichaelG. and Hobbyst46 Is the 12.5X KPL raised above parfocality height ? Is it a 12.5x -W high eyepoint KPL ? Raised 10mm by the collar shown. High eyepoint (as indicated by the eyeglass pictogram) but believe field of view is 18mm . Great shot! Why do you need the collar exactly? What h...

FS: Zeiss Pol 25/0,45
I offer a classical tension-free Zeiss 25/0,45 objective for polarization work. The collar runs smoothly and optics are in excellent condition (no delamination, fungus, scratches etc.). Some minor cosmetic blemishes can be seen but they do not affect the performance. Cost is 95 eur + shipping. Best ...

Re: Using aluminium tape to make spacers for water sample specimens
I use a syringe with petroleum jelly/vaseline to make a fine border on the coverslip. Make sure to leave a gap so when you press on the coverslip with a needle ot fine tweezers the extra water has a passageway to escape your chamber. Thus you can regulate the thickness of the sample and apply just e...

Re: Zeiss Photomicroscope DIC Inko questions.
I think this kind of DIC depends on specific objectives (e.g. Plan 40/0.65) and it only works within particular serial number brackets of those particular objectives.
Definitely try to regular nosepiece turret if you have it handy.

Re: Remedy for eyepiece delamination
I have no idea what the Zeiss standard of accuracy was. Well the Germans are known for their engineering standards and attention to details so I imagine fairly tight tolerances. I can't remember where I saw it but modern high end objectives being assembled by hand using tiny hammers to nudge the le...

Re: Remedy for eyepiece delamination
The ultimate way to fix delaminated eyepieces would be to soak the doublets in hexane and once they separate apply fresh lens cement. . Assuming that you have the equipment/skill to centre the two elements to the original standard. MichaelG. How would you go about that? Its a topic I'm quite curiou...

Re: Remedy for eyepiece delamination
I tried that, it works...sort of. I can definitely see residual defects in the optics that become more obvious with time but still significantly better than before applying the oil. Don't know if sealing the edges with say canada balsam would improve the ever so slightly gradual deterioration of the...

Re: A trinocular phase contrast Zeiss standard on eBay
It does look 'crusty' but, you are getting a Standard 18 with 5 objective turret, a trinocular head, phase condenser and lighting with power source. Something a person could work with. Sure if the parts you mention are in a good condition its a bargain. But if they are all riddled with fungus, rust...

Re: Where to buy slides and #1.5 coverslips
If you are looking at aquatic samples, # 1 coverslips are often more suitable. The recommendation for using #2 covers is based on an ideal but many amateurs prepare aquatic samples too thick. For higher resolution objectives .40 N.A. and over but especially .65 and over using thinner coverslips , ....

Re: A trinocular phase contrast Zeiss standard on eBay
One thing that I have spotted is a bit of corrosion on some of the screws. The objectives are crusty as well. As things on ebay tend to go bad rather than good and given the shabby appearance of the scope I'd make a guess and say it doesn't look like a particularly good deal Perhaps an unpopular op...

I like this thread! For many reasons, this type of periodontal clinical microscopy died out in the 1980's. I'm sure there are still many weird organisms living in there, unknown to science, but no one is looking for them any more. But why would people willingly abandon such a research niche? Seems i...

Thats a cool channel that one can easily slip into binge watching. They use a well slide in this section but I suppose if you want to do this properly i.e. quantitatively I'd suggest you hydrolyse the biological material with hydrochloric acid, then centrifuge to collect the plastic bits and stain w...

Re: How to attach a modern camera to this Zeiss Universal accessory?
What you need is a Zeiss West 43.5 mm dovetail to either a male M42 or T2 adapter (see picture below). What worked for me was to add a M42 female to 52 mm male thread adapter but that could be any thread your camera lens accepts. As Bob had advised me at some point I bought a Canon 40 mm pancake len...
