American Optical Series 15
I've been slowly assembling a finite scope. I was previously using an AO Series 35, but I acquired a scope for it's objectives and found them attached to a binocular Series 15. The 35 and 15 are design wise pretty similar in appearance and both are 34mm parfocal 160mm tube length mcroscopes; where t...

Re: Microstar IV - focus mechanism assembly
I am indeed wanting to part them out, I need to condense my collection and these are just in the way at this point. What parts are you looking for?apochronaut wrote: ↑Sun Jun 05, 2022 8:26 pmIf you are intent on parting them out, I can use a couple of parts. I have one that must have been serviced at an outboard motor shop.

Microstar IV - focus mechanism assembly
I have a couple of Microstar IV scopes which are missing parts and/or in rough enough shape that there's no point in saving the stand so I'd like to strip them to compact my boneyard a bit. Do any of you know of a thread, site, etc which details the assembly so I don't need to risk destroying one to...

Microscope case/storage boxes
I've seen the odd discussion here and there about travel/carry/storage boxes for microscopes, I currently have a couple of them, 3 factory and one custom made; all with a variety of time related damage. I believe the general concensus is that the storage cases are just extra bulk and not especially ...

Re: To Buy or Not to Buy?
I'm not familiar with that scope, but I have handled similar Japanese scopes from around the same time period. They usually perform reasonably well with good optics, though probably not plan. The price seems a tad high to me, but not outside the realm of reasonable assuming everything works.

Re: These 'New Members'
I had no idea but I have seen it on other forums. Maybe the question is too easy? The problem is that the tech is getting better; it's pretty trivial these days to programatically parse a simple question and get the answer. At the point you start tripping up the program, humans tend to be failing a...

This is an old issues, yes. I raised it some years ago https://www.microbehunter.com/microscopy-forum/viewtopic.php?f=8&t=8276 What I suggest is to have a question at the time one registers. Something simple yet relevant to the hobby for example "Which part of the microscope do you look through wit...

It's hard to balance vetting new members and fighting spam, if you make it harder for the spambots to get in, you also make it harder for new members to sign up. The issue isn't helped by the fact the spam gangs often use compromised machines to run the programs which trawl the internet for forums a...

Re: AO 214F darkfield condenser part?
The dovetail on those condensers is a slip on, fastened by two set screws. Under it is a neck of just under 37mm allowing the condenser to be used in non dovetail condenser sleeves of 37mm or larger if you put a larger adapter ring on it. I think originally, it was designed to be used on B & L as w...

AO 214F darkfield condenser part?
This ring/collar came with my darkfield condenser, but the manual doesn't mention it and I'm not even sure it belongs with the DF condenser. It has an insider diameter of approximately 1-7/16" (36.5mm) and an outside diameter of around 1-9/16" (39mm). The ring is complete aside from a single hole ne...

I would expect 'white' but at a higher colour temperature than the LED and which would be variable. I suppose one advantage of an LED is that the colour temperature is fixed for a particular device. But that colour temperature will be determined by the stimulating/blue wavelength and the stimulated...

Re: LED lighting....why the hate?
I usually get a nicely binned high cri Cree high power single die led and hook it up myself all the parts together might cost $50 you would therefore not find the same on a $200 new microscope, particularly if it had been manufactured ten years or even five years ago. I do the same thing. Sure it's...

Re: Will an infinity scope minus its tube lens work with 160mm optics
My eyeglasses and oculars are not friends; I end up mostly viewing digital images, and forfeiting the head was no great sacrifice. I certainly understand that, I find these days as I use the camera more and more, a monocular design as I have one some of my scopes is no impediment to their use. I ju...

Re: Will an infinity scope minus its tube lens work with 160mm optics
AO series 10 infinity scopes have their tube lens in the bottom of the head. I removed the head, screwed in a Leitz 10x 160 objective, got 50.4mm to m42 dovetail from RafCamera, and stacked a bellows and digital camera body on that. Whether it is still considered an infinity scope or whether this i...

Thanks for all the advice! It's still pretty overwhelming, but now I have a much broader range of brands/models to look for. One thing I've noticed is that the turret of most models would have to be removed (probably via hacksaw) as they'd get in the way, which doesn't sound like much fun. I suppos...

It seems the more I read about this the more I get confused... Why isn't there a straight answer to this question? Toilet paper? A schraeder seems a tad too large, so I think that's out of the running. I've got too many projects to get to the lathe (for starters, there's a car in front of it that needs to be fixed first), so it will be a while before I attempt anything there. In the meantime, I've begun modelling the wrench p...

I'm not a profesional, but I think it would depend on the materials one is handling. For a bit of pondwater, an insect, dust from the vacuum, spores, algae, and the other things we normally come into contact with during our lives, handwashing is likely sufficient. If you're working with more hazardo...

Re: AO 10/20 phase condenser needing repair
I'd be inclined to use a pair of 0.50 hex wrenches - tiny ones with screwdriver handles are readily available. They're actually easier to use than the push in wrenches with the push-back springs that get stuck. If you want to make something up yourself along the lines of the original, Schrader valv...
