Re: Converting metalurgical microscope to biological?
Thanks, sorry for the late response.
It's a Brunel, the model number isn't available but to me it looks like a Sp400, but which one I don't know.
I would be mostly using the 10X and 20X objectives, avian fecal samples.

Converting metalurgical microscope to biological?
Hello There could be a metalurgical microscope up for sale at a reasonable price, its designed to be used without coverslips so I've learnt that if I want to use it to view biological samples where I would normally use a coverslip I would have to replace the objective lenses. Is there any way as thr...

Re: Replacing mirror prism?
Thanks Chas, I haven't tried rubbing it but I can give that a go.
It did cross my mind to re-silver it myself but I'm not sure if it would be worth the risk, a quick look at the companies that offer this service and it looks like it wouldn't cost much, maybe £30 including return shipping.

Re: Replacing mirror prism?
Thanks for the reply. 🙂 As you say there are a few heads for sale, I think the cheapest was something like £80 including delivery, most are in the US. I thought a search for having the prism mirror resilvered would've come up with something but I can't find anything, plenty of astronomers having mir...

Replacing mirror prism?
Hi I bought a very cheap Nikon model S a while ago, I fixed the fine adjustment which wasn't working but what's annoying me now is the deterioration of the reflective surface in a prism mirror that's in the head. I know you can buy prism mirror's but I haven't found any the size of the one that I wo...

Re: Opening up an objective!
Thanks apochronaut and Element, it's much appreciated.
I certainly don't have anything to lose in trying to assemble it so I'll give that a go.

Re: Opening up an objective!
They probably do but objectives are fine tuned for the centering of the elements in a jig and as well need to be adjusted for spherical aberration. Older objectives were for sure shimmed internally and the shim thicknesses are unique to each objective. Unless you were the first person to open the o...

Opening up an objective!
Hello I'm in the process of restoring an old NIkon Model S, I've fixed the fine adjustment nylon gear that was split which I know was a common fault but someone who previously owned the microscope decided to open up one of the objectives and the invidual lenses haven't been fitted correctly as the i...

Re: Glue for doublet lenses?
Thanks for the replies.
Unfortunately the Norland adhesive isn't available on Amazon or eBay, there's a guy on eBay in Bulgaria selling the Canada Balsam for £13.50 so that's almost half the cost of the Norland adhesive.

Glue for doublet lenses?
Hello I'm in the process of fixing up my Nikon Model S, the Canada Balsam used for gluing the doublet lenses in the eyepieces has deteriorated leaving the typical spider web pattern around the outside. I've separated the lenses so they'll now need to be cleaned and glued together again but I'm strug...

Thanks Mike, I replied to your PM a couple of day's ago but I'm not sure if you received the message as I read somewhere that there are restrictions on messaging depending on how many post's a person has made when first joining the forum.

Re: Microscope -Avian Disease's
Thanks everyone. ;) The person selling the AO microscope which is on eBay in the UK decided to remove the advert as there was a error in the listing, I don't believe that. I sent a message to the seller and they've said that it wouldn't be relisted but they would take £60 or $80. The only problem I ...

Re: Microscope -Avian Disease's
Thanks everyone. I wasn't aware that it had B & L eyepieces. Unfortunately the nearest avian vet sends his sample's away to be tested. There was a local vet who had previously worked in a poultry farm so I was hopeful he would be able to help, a few month's ago I left some faeces to be teste...

Microscope -Avian Disease's
Hello All this microscope stuff is very new so it's not easy trying to figure out which microscope I should purchase for diagnosing avian disease's, in particular those encountered by pigeons. The reason I've decided I need to do this is that I'm a volunteer at a wildlife rescue in the UK, we rely o...
