Re: From the Biofilm

It was in a closed bottle--but I received the original water sample from my son who has a salt water aquarium. It's been in the small bottle for a two months or so. At first it was overrun with algae harboring long worms. Then the algae produced multitudes of spores. The spores seems to have formed ...

From the Biofilm

I have water samples in small prescription bottles. Biofilms have been developing, floating on top. They appear to be made mostly of the spores of algae fused with a bunch of skeletons and fibers. I found many diatoms in it--many of them look like just the silicon shells are left. I made some pictur...

Thanks Bob. I did buy a box of concave slides. If these work it can solve the problem too.

High-Powered Objective always hits the coverglass

I can hardly ever use my high-power objective because it focusses below the level of the cover glass. It either knocks it when I move the slide or it doesn't focus. Are my cover glasses too thick or what?

Re: What happened to the Microbe Hunter magazine?

I am just grateful to find you on YouTube. You re-awakened a long dormant interest, especially when you pointed out that I could enjoy the hobby at an acceptable level without a huge cash outlay. Thank you. I am really enjoying myself as I muddle around with my microscope.

Re: LOMO as a brand

Unless I have the wrong memory, Lomo used to make very cheap film cameras that were designed to purposefully make very poor images, but you could get them with strange features. I used to have one that took 6 pictures in rapid succession on the same image frame on the film. I still have a LOMO 3D le...

Re: The Myth of the Digital Microscope

I have no grievance. That camera claims 250X. When I was using it, I thought I was getting 250X. Then when I tried it on an objective criterion it turned out to be like a magnifying glass. I know a lot of people using them for welding and looking at circuits. These commercial products are no more th...

Re: The Myth of the Digital Microscope

The magnification number isn't important--the same thing can be said for any camera. If you present it in IMAX, it will look huge. It's a resolution issue really. It's not honest to say 250X when on an ordinary monitor you don't get anything like 250X.

Adhesives for Slide Preparation

I am adhesive poor. I am using white paper glue to adhere my cover glass to the slide. It's really messy and completely not water tight. What is the adhesive to use?

Re: The Myth of the Digital Microscope

I bought a number of them over the years. Some of them make claims to be 1,000 power. Actually the magnification comes from how close the subject is from the lens. These pictures of my stage micrometer were taken with the camera sitting on top of it, as close as you can get. The most magnified pictu...

The Myth of the Digital Microscope

I was buying digital microscopes for a while. I was touting the images I obtained as micrographs. I tested the digital microscopes I have against a stage micrometer and retuned a startling conclusion. They don't resolve like microscopes. These are as magnified as they get. One brand is slightly stro...
