The colony of protists and organisms in the mudpuddle becomes more dense. They begin to press together in three-dimensional masses. One group, a rectangular organism with no visible nucleus--possible a large bacteria--has appeared.

Evolution
What makes things bigger reveals the cracks in the smooth telling of life. We are among the tiny beads strung together along the ridges of a mystery. Those with no eyes swim in our blood, open to accept swallowed pieces of the past. Other worlds ignore us, satisfied that we don't see them. They buil...

Structure Dropped on the Soil by the Plant
It looks like part of the reproduction process deposited by the grassy plant. It has a structure similar to a leaf but it may be a seed carrier.

Waking in the Middle of the Night
I know them from a distance. But they are so familiar I would even call them intimate. They belong to me just as they belong to you. And I can't possess all the ones that I didn't own before. Almost all I will never touch. They are shared but at such distance. Created by chance that cold mechanics e...

Massing Micro Life
It looked like there was mold on the surface of the mud puddle. But it isn't mold it is a massed colony of microbes that is floating on the water like a solid lump.

These leaf cells appear to diffract light almost like lenses, making microscope viewing and photography difficult.

Protists Living in Mold
Vegetation in the biome sample supports the growth of mold-like fiberous structures. The population is not as big as that in the stagnant water around it and the organisms are less active.

The Conversion Zone
This is the place where protist-filled water meets nutrient-filled water. It's action central for the great biological process of conversion from solid to liquid.

"the body uses to explore the surrounding environment. In my opinion, this flagellum also serves to recognize and obtain food." I'm intrigued. You (like almost all of us) use these plainly human cognitive words to describe the lives of organisms that are not supposed to be capable of cognition. Do y...

Structures in a Strawberry
Strawberries are especially intersting subjects for fruit lovers. They have a mysterious and unique texture when you eat them. The texture of a strawberry invites curiousity. However, the strawberry is very good at hiding its mysteries. I can see a variety of cell structures in a tiny sample of the ...

Groups
The way it works with my microscope studies is that I rarely see organisms one a time. They are always in bunches. I will always see them in groups except for those which swim quickly around. The question is how much of microbes being close together is really social or group behavior? How much does ...

The mudpuddle is a kind of bizarre manna from heaven for protists. It's like a continuous school of fish for hungry whales. They have no real mouths but they soak in nutrients as if they were tiny whales.

The water of my mudpuddle has become a foam from the activity of bacteria among the protists bunching in the water. Lumps of partially consumed vegetable matter form a kind coating on the surface.

Celery Stalk
Celery stalks are complex biologically mature structures. Semi-transparent layers of cells with varied structures are buried under and between each other. It is difficult to summarize and even visualize them. This is a very tiny and thin sliver of a large celery stalk.

Biome Overcrowding
The protists from this new culture have multiplied so much that the culture is like a syrup. Deposits in the water medium dull the view like a cloud. The crowded biome is also more or less uniform. A limited range of organisms appear in these samples that I take from these mudpuddle sources. My expe...

New Biome
As the weather got warmer, I collected grass and added the plant matter to water from the sink. After a day, the water had developed a new biofilm and protozoan life is massive. The only problem with this kind of sample is lack of clear diversity. Sometimes things do happen though. One thing I do no...

Cells of a Strawberry
I tried to get a thin cut of the skin of a fresh strawberry. The juiciness of the fruit made it very difficult. I could only get a clear shot with the mid-range (40 x) objective. The liquid surfaces and gasses from the fruit made images at the higher magnifications impossible. https://youtu.be/LWjq7...

The Biofilm Starts to Thin
After more than a month, the work of the biofilm nears completion. The vegetation is being consumed by the protists and there is less vegetable matter to support the population. It looks like time is near to renew the vegetation in the biome.
