Which Are the Stars?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y_Gy7PK2DCM When I examine the mudpuddle under the right kind of illumination, it looks like the firmament, organisms like stars. I know the main targets of my searches are the larger ciliates. I somehow understand them. But i also see the myriads of strange creatures...

St. Anne's Lace

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QoA7tBk9Fx0 I traveled through the wonders of a Queen Anne's Lace this afternoon. This is an intricate gathering of delicate white flowers, each which has tiny petals as well as stems and leaves. It's unusual and lovely tower of flowers that hides all the hard reality...

If you have not seen this tutorial by Peter Evennett yet, then do so. Required viewing by all microscopists in my opinion.

Life around Rooting Plants

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WP2KBVAx1qs My friend insists on trying to keep some plants viable by rooting them in water. Inevitably after a few days, the jar becomes infested with goodies for me. In this case, the water quickly filled with colpoda, a ciliate that lives on the stems of plants. I ...

Journey through the Rasperry

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c71VUzTmB4s When I say the rasperry, I mean the stem, the leaves, the fruit itself and the small leaves around the perimeter of the fruit. The rasperry is a sticker fruit. You have to avoid spines when you pick it. It's also a woody, bushy plant. There is a lot of var...

Photographic Expedition

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SkZpLufocTo
This is my account of the morning's photographic expedition through the mudpuddle biome (Mudpuddle National Park to me). It is harder than I thought to get a decent close-up image of a microbe. However, there are some pretty good shots in this collection.

Broadleaf Weed Salt of the Earth

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oTt9wl7gPvk
I took my journey over the surface of a common broadleaf weed. What I saw was strange and beautiful in some ways, but was not alien. It was the stuff of the Earth, reminding me of things I have held in my hand and lifted.

Mature Amoeba in the Wild Mudpuddle

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xEZWpw-Qzkc The first thing I saw when I looked at my mudpuddle sample was something I suspected to be a large amoeba. You never know with amoebas because they look like blobs. You have to wait until they move in an amoeba way. This one did. I followed it around and g...

Rubbery Weed with Tiny Flowers

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Izvz3jeZWPI I chose a small unexciting weed as a subject again. I guess I have a fantasy about lifting the ordinary out of anonymity. This weed did have some remarkable structures including nearly invisible 1 mm flowers. At times it was difficult to photograph, gettin...

Community in a Vase

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4NXiR-isTZg
A vase my friend has been rooting plants in was a city of microorganisms of all types. The bacteria clouded the water and the ciliates were busy grazing on nutrients in the floating plant material.

Art in a Carrot Top

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EY4KoiuYvmk Nature is the mother of art, often filtered through the eye and mind of a human artist, but, as I discovered with the microscope, possibly without the help of human beings. I present some microscopic images of a carrot top which human artists could equal b...

Community of Smellers

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SmbrOLNTb34 I keep wondering what the life of a one-celled creature must be like. I know they don't have the capacity for real vision or hearing. They are limited to direct contact sensation. They probably have some kind of sense of touch. A very important sense for t...

The Art in the Weeds
Every time I visit a weed and take the tour, I feel I am seeing works of art in the structure of the plant. I wanted to demonstrate that feeling to people so I present a few microscopic images of a weed all dressed up like works of art.

I took a little trip on the mud puddle waters looking for ciliate life. I took many a wrong turn this morning, this way and that, focus, un-focus, until at last I found them. I enjoyed the dance.
