Biome #2 Fast Maturing

This biome was formed from the most recent puddle. The organisms are different from those in the earlier puddle. This biome came from rainwater found outside (the previous sample was from water collected inside). Novel forms of various sizes are showing up with each observation. The biofilm is formi...

Microscopic Industry: Mass Digestion

The biological cycle begins with a mass digestion process. The protist community matures to the size necessary for the task of reducing a large mass of vegetable cells to where it can eliminated from the environment. This requires an interspecies coordination project of some magnitude. https://youtu...

New Mudpuddle Biofilm Supporting Bacteria

My observation of this new sample of a rainwater puddle started a few days ago. Today, for the first time, a significant biofilm has shown. Bacteria are visible in quantity, but protists are harder to find. This is a work in progress.

Derived from the Old Mudpuddle Sample

This is from the same water of the original cultured sample I was watching for this last year. I recently added some new vegetation. The biofilm is still very firm and solid pieces of the vegetation remain.

Grabbed from a Puddle on the Lawn #2

This was from the water sample I took yesterday. No biofilm had yet formed but there was was considerable active microscopic life in the puddle. There were some interesting small and inactive objects in the sample as well the larger active protists.

Re: Grabbed from a Puddle on the Lawn

Thanks Macmotion. Life is there and we are lucky to find it. When you consider how small the chance that we would find it by grabbing some water from a random puddle. There must be a fair amount of life on Earth.

Grabbed from a Puddle on the Lawn

I was curious. Luckily I found a fresh rainwater puddle on the grass. I sampled the water, making sure that I took some small pieces of leaf that were soaking in the puddle. I was surprised that there was considerable active microscopic life in the puddle. The rainwater was very fresh and there was ...

The Plan of Things

Do things plan to destroy each other?
Why can't things live in peace?
Protection is so one-sided and expensive.
The costs of the Earth are high.
Yet a peacful tangerine is greeted by
the fearsome mold and we are left without taste.
Doesn't fate care?

About 24 hours ago, I cleared most of the biome from previous days and added some new fruit scraps. The biome jumped in size and some new species appeared.

Bottom Feeders

These are images of organisms living near the bottom of the water column, among them many rotifers and some larger protists. For the last few weeks, I have been focused on organisms in the top of the water column. The two worlds seem to develop more or less independently.

Mold Invaded Orange Cells

My tangerine orange purchase was moldy. I could see the mold with naked eye very easily, but when I tried to look at it under the microscope I wasn't sure what I should look for. In the small section I viewed, nothing looked normal. I could only suspect that this was caused by the infection. You can...

Fruit of a Damaged Apple

This apple was discarded because the side of it was crushed and discolored. I found severe distortion of the cell shape and structure inside the fruit. Here much of the cell forms were unrecognizable. However, near the skin the damage to the form of the cells was much less severe. Cell shapes were n...

The Inspector

It sits
waiting for me
to open my eyes,
just this side of sleep,
between sleep and
something deeper.
It hides the messages
but not well enough.
I am too eager.
When I act fast
and grab it
I feel the annoyance
and the surprise
for yet another evening.

The Entire Surface is Biofilm

The organisms are moving in and on a film of decayed vegetation. I can lift it right out of the water and deposit it on a slide. It clearly won't be long until the nutrition is gone. Only two organism groups remain along with bacteria. The protists begin to accumulate along dynamic flow lines. https...

It's strange that the red colored green pepper appeared green under the microscope. The slices might have been too thick but you can make out the cell structure in some views. It's a tricky fruit to slice.

Structures in Tomato Seed Gelatine

I have been interested in tomato seeds for some time. The seeds themselves are very hard to dissect and view because they are amazingly hard to cut and too thick to conveniently view. But viewing the gelatin that surrounds the seed is itself very interesting. There are structures suspended in the ge...

The Mopping Up of Plant Cells

The plant material has been largely digested. Only traces of cell walls are still visible. The small, active protists have declined in number and a few larger circular protists appear. Where there was a a cover of floating vegetation a few days ago, now there is just a green film. https://youtu.be/S...

Lumpy Cells inside a Greenpepper

When you look inside a green pepper you see a lot of liquid-filled lumps, even with a naked eye, These are not really cells even though they may look like it. Cells are much smaller. The cells are like tiny bumps inside larger lumps.

The Failing Integrity of Plant Cells

This is the last of failing integration in the cell structure of a piece of fruit decaying in water. You can still make out some faint cell structure. But protists are quickly converting the solid structure into a liquid.

Two Poems about Art

Fingers on Strings and Mouths on Tubes I keep watching orchestras. I watch choirs as well. The calm of soul carriers, gathered in chairs, facing books with bits of soul smeared on them. We took that language from before birth. We always nimbed and nammed it. But it began to fill space and moved betw...
