This is a demonstration of what a microscope does to a small lawn leaf. It goes from a macro image to full magnification under the microscope (about 30x to about 1,000 X).

Microbes At Home
The surface of the water is now covered with decayed leaves. Gasses collect under the grass and over the water surface tension. Colonies of protists move under disintegrating pieces of leaves. The cell structure of the decayed leaves is altered as the vegetation is being digested in the biofilm. htt...

Thanks for that methodology. I obviously didn't do much to prepare my specimens and the product shows it.

The Onion Skin Devil
Taking microscope images of onion skin is supposed to be an elementary exercise usually not worth the efforts of serious hobbyists. I found it pretty hard to do. For one thing onions make gaseous fumes which tend to fog lenses. I also found the skins difficult to gracefully cut. Anyway I got some pi...

Microscopic Sheep and Herders
Well, that title pretty much covers the whole place, even where the citizens are just resting. These protists are grazers in a resource-rich region. They live in a resource-rich environment and feed on the product of protists who make the milk--i.e. predigested vegetation. They don't have to hunt. T...

I stay here
day after day
Imagining.
I tax my memory.
I warm the past,
drag it from the darkness.
I am constructed
with devices to
deny time. I
stretch the present
and pull it out
into a cover for time.
I find the treasures
to re-ignite.
I dream the past.

Un-scraped and Scraped Grass Blades
The new grass is finally showing green in the lawn after a long cold season in Winnipeg. I took a sample of a small broad leaf grass in the lawn. I looked at it un-scraped and then I scraped the outer layer of cells (top then bottom) to clear the cell membranes.

It Keeps Getting Denser
The biome is a pile of living things moving through a syrup of digested vegetation. The cell structure of the leaf residue is lost. It is now a mass of dense green syrup with lumps of still undigested leaf structure. I can no longer discern the cell structure in what was grassy leaves before. https:...

Wow! Thanks for the kind words. You know you are feeding a huge ego. I never saw much color in the world of microbes. They are usually translucent.

Maybe Something New Coming
I've been watching this biome for weeks. It's a very dense biofilm with bits of solid material floating through it. The digestion of much of the vegetation by the protists is clear. Now I am seeing an ameba returning. It seems like the range and variety of protists may still develop with time. https...

A New Grass
I celebrated Spring by examining a brand new blade of grass from root to leaf. The root was still coated with dirt, exactly as it emerged from the soil. I used magnifications from digital microscope to high power objective for these images.

The Roof of the Microbe Settlement
This is more of the thickening vegetable shell floating on top of the water. The microbes are prospering as they process the proteins in the water and generate biofilm. I'm never bored watching them.

Protists in Slightly Deeper Water
I just stuck my pipette close to the bottom of my water jar to get a sample. After several weeks my water sample has separated into a dense biome that sinks to the bottom of the jar and another biome which floats on top. The middle of the sample is clear water. There appear to be sampling difference...

Leaf of a Pineapple Fruit
The pineapple fruit is topped by a formation of stiff stickery leaves. These are usually tossed off as unimportant. However, the leaves of a pineapple have their own unique look. They are very stiff and hard and close to protect the fruit almost like a shell. The cells are big and bold. They have a ...

This is basic life on Earth. They are all hungry and frantic. They couldn't servive if they weren't even if they knew what survival means. Sameness and Individuality in Leaf Cells
The cells that make up leaves are generally all the same. But microscopic examination suggests that cells have individual differences from each other. These differences appear to be due to both heredity variance and variance due to growth conditions.

I was a monster today. The boy wouldn't look at me. He hid his face when I appeared at lunch and tried to run away but couldn't get far. Was I ready to consume him? Perhaps. He had waited. I wonder if I was some kind of dream. My body had alrady begun to fade and for him I already did, small pieces ...

State of the Biome
The biofilm is reaching a late stage. I keep adding nutrition and the biome gets more dense. It has become something of a management problem when the biome materials pile up on the slide. It's still too cold in Winnipeg to collect a new sample. Still, I may have to reduce this one. https://youtu.be/...

Egg shells have an inner layer of knotted fiber and an outer layer of solid crystal excretion. I examined the inner lining layer. These layers are discernable through the microscope viewed at high power. The fibers are hard to see. because they are extremely thin and they congeal together. https://y...

The water is full of very small organisms that pack the water and dim the image. Because of a previous experiment some of the image is clouded--the lens needs cleaning, But I would say this is a microbe chaos.
