The mudpuddle is a kind of bizarre manna from heaven for protists. It's like a continuous school of fish for hungry whales. They have no real mouths but they soak in nutrients as if they were tiny whales.

Inside Skin of an Apple
Skin of a ripe apple has large irregular cells. Fluids on the surface makes photography difficult. Lighting was very tricky for me. I had to close the lens way down to get any sharpness.

Inner Skin of a Mandarin Orange
The outside of the mandarin orange skin looks and feels like plastic. The inside of the skin has a cushion-like feel as if it were made to protect the fruit. The cell structure of this cushiony surface is not regular and even. Parts of it looks like it's made of little shock absorbers. However nothi...

Protists in Mold Growth
The vegetation covering the biofilm has developed a mold. Protists circulate through the mold feeding on bacteria and other organisms growing in the rich biome.

Protists in a Bacteria Froth
The water of my mudpuddle has become a foam from the activity of bacteria among the protists bunching in the water. Lumps of partially consumed vegetable matter form a kind coating on the surface.

Celery Stalk
Celery stalks are complex biologically mature structures. Semi-transparent layers of cells with varied structures are buried under and between each other. It is difficult to summarize and even visualize them. This is a very tiny and thin sliver of a large celery stalk.

Biome Overcrowding
The protists from this new culture have multiplied so much that the culture is like a syrup. Deposits in the water medium dull the view like a cloud. The crowded biome is also more or less uniform. A limited range of organisms appear in these samples that I take from these mudpuddle sources. My expe...

New Biome
As the weather got warmer, I collected grass and added the plant matter to water from the sink. After a day, the water had developed a new biofilm and protozoan life is massive. The only problem with this kind of sample is lack of clear diversity. Sometimes things do happen though. One thing I do no...

Cells of a Strawberry
I tried to get a thin cut of the skin of a fresh strawberry. The juiciness of the fruit made it very difficult. I could only get a clear shot with the mid-range (40 x) objective. The liquid surfaces and gasses from the fruit made images at the higher magnifications impossible. https://youtu.be/LWjq7...

New Vegetation Added
I added new vegetation from a neighborhood puddle to water from the tap. The microbe population resembles that from previous populations, but the density is much increased.

The Biofilm Starts to Thin
After more than a month, the work of the biofilm nears completion. The vegetation is being consumed by the protists and there is less vegetable matter to support the population. It looks like time is near to renew the vegetation in the biome.

The sweet fruit of the mandarin orange is contained in flexibe bag-like cells. In spite of their flexibility and fragility, the long cells are quite distinct under the microscope. Skin structures are also visible distributed over the surface.

The fruit of the green pepper contains a complex seed mount. The tissue is rigid like plastic with small bumps. The cell structures in the seed are irregular with a variety of layered structures. This is a quick survey of a sample.

Pulling on My Pants
Death is a worthy opponent.
I will not demean her.
Ooh devilish, a changer of memory,
a changer of signposts,
a quiet deceiver.
I surprise myself. And death
is not I. Death moved in
and sliced my mind.
I must call out
how I don't love her.
She can't have me.
I will not demean her.

Leaf Cells Under Attack from Protists
Originally I dropped some leaves into a pool of water. Within hours the pool was inhabited by microbes moving through the cells of the leaf. After a few weeks the structure of the leaf cells began to change. I continue taking pictures of the changes and the slow process of change in the cells. Here ...

Cells of a Leaf from the Lawn
This is a demonstration of what a microscope does to a small lawn leaf. It goes from a macro image to full magnification under the microscope (about 30x to about 1,000 X).

Microbes At Home
The surface of the water is now covered with decayed leaves. Gasses collect under the grass and over the water surface tension. Colonies of protists move under disintegrating pieces of leaves. The cell structure of the decayed leaves is altered as the vegetation is being digested in the biofilm. htt...

The Onion Skin Devil
Taking microscope images of onion skin is supposed to be an elementary exercise usually not worth the efforts of serious hobbyists. I found it pretty hard to do. For one thing onions make gaseous fumes which tend to fog lenses. I also found the skins difficult to gracefully cut. Anyway I got some pi...
