This is a good suggestion, thank you Leonard! Definitely smaller and easier to store than the wider jars, I think.20ml glass scintillation vials

Containers for FAA fixed plants
Hi everyone,
I was wondering what the best container is for long-term storage of plants that are fixed in FAA (to be stored for later processing and sectioning). Should these containers be plastic or glass? On a side note, what type of container should be used to store the FAA itself?
Thanks!

Thank you both for the advice. Culturing/feeding the container is a good idea, and I will make sure to keep more plants in the sample!

Advice for sampling
Hi all, I've run into a sort of problem with sampling water. I take water samples and they yield few microorganisms. I aim to sample from water that shows signs of life (algae growing on the surface, plants around the edge of a pond, plants in the water, etc). I also sample from water that looks kin...

Buxus sp. TS stained
Buxus sp. , a favorite of mine because its common name is "boxwood," and the transverse sections are rather box-shaped! But the wood from the shrub was commonly used to make boxes, among other pieces of woodworking, which is where the common name really comes from. 1 - introduction https://lh...

This is a very interesting video and a phenomenal capture, Javier! I think I have come to a conclusion of what this could be: Volvocacean algae infected by chytrids. Brassica rapa var. parachinensis TS safranin-o and crystal-violet stain
Hi everyone, I have been drawn to the bright yellow flowers of the yu choy plant so I have spent some time sectioning and staining their stem, using the opportunity to test some crystal-violet stain. 1 - background Yu choy/choy sum, or Brassica rapa var. parachinensis , is a vegetable very similar t...

Re: Ligustrum spp. TS safranin-o stain
Definitely - TBO is a superb stain, especially for live (i.e. unprocessed as per hand-sectioned) tissue. Make sure you rinse it well after staining to get the very best from TBO - take the time (only a matter of say 10 minutes really) to rinse well with water (preferable deionised - whatever water ...

Hi AntoniScott, I unfortunately don’t have much advice to give on how to overcome image quality challenges, although in terms of camera comparisons, fellow forum member Rob Berdan did a very good and in-depth camera comparison here: https://www.microbehunter.com/microscopy-forum/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=...

Conjugation of oxytrichidae
Conjugation of Oxytrichidae (I think it's Oxytrichidae?) with 40x, 100x, 400x, and 600x magnification. Water sample was from a small stream near me. It was the first time I saw ciliate conjugation in one of my own samples, so that was pretty cool!!

Re: Amoeba? (Marine sample)
Though I still think that this might be an amoeba preparing for division, given that it looks very similar to that, I do have an interesting image. I had been reading the book Handbook of Protozoology by Richard Kudo when I encountered an organism of a shape similar to one I had only seen once befor...

Re: Coleps?
It is in the family Colepidae, but is not necessarily Coleps . The old genus Coleps has been split, and identification now requires a close view of the calcified armour & spines, to rule out Nolandia , Reticoleps , Pinacocoleps , etc. We don't see enough detail, here, for ID to genus. Fascinating, ...
