Re: Petrographic thin sections
Hi Andy Good to see some images of thin sections! I did a geology course at Uni back in 2018 and part of it was looking at various thin sections and learning how to analyse and describe what you were seeing. As it involved microscopy, I naturally enjoyed it! I just ordered some prepared thin section...

I suddenly remembered I have a clone LMPlan 5X inf in place. I'd forgotten! That's what you get when you don't do something for a year especially when you're elderly! I have to remember and relearn everything! Anyway, I took a quick pic of some aluminium kitchen foil: Foil_20pc_DSCF0213.jpg Any opin...

Re: Nikon DIC Turret Objectives
Thanks again, guys! I bought it on an Ebay auction a couple of years ago but I've not done any microscopy stuff for a year. I got it for £290 in the auction - seemed reasonable :) I can see the expected interference pattern through the ocular but haven't been able to properly see a DIC image. But th...

Re: Nikon DIC Turret Objectives
They might, but with a Nikon finite metallurgical setup it is awkward to find out because the illuminator just has empty space in it and demands 210mm objectives and 160mm objectives will be pushed way out of spec. There aren't too many non-nikon 210 objectives. That said Nikon also made infinity m...

Nikon DIC Turret Objectives
Hi everyone I have one of these Nikon turrets with 4 prisms: NikonDICTurret.JPG I was just wondering if anyone on here has experience of using one? If so, do you know if I can use it with a 'standard' Nikon CF M Plan objective or do I absolutely have to have a DIC version? (which I can't find anywhe...

Re: Low-cost Smartphone Fluorescence Microscope
I'm expecting the clip-on lenses today. However, I think they may be somewhat redundant now! I've made adapters for a 10x EP, a 25x EP as well as the lower power plano convex lenses which together are f = 29.5mm. I've just been using the UV torch for illumination. I think I'm sceptical of the paper'...

Re: Low-cost Smartphone Fluorescence Microscope
A working fluorescence setup for any microscope could be build from low cost components. A blue LED, a battery and some yellow gelatin filter are all you need. I recommend blue over UV light. It gives much stronger fluorescence from chlorophyll for example and it is saver as well. Picture quality u...

Re: Low-cost Smartphone Fluorescence Microscope
You can surely do it just for fun and it should work in theory. Though otherwise I don’t see a point of using DIY “microscope” and a smartphone, when you have a real microscope (and objectives) and a real camera (whose noise tolerance is much higher than a phone camera). Image quality in that manus...

Re: Low-cost Smartphone Fluorescence Microscope
Just for fun I ordered a couple of the clip-on macro lenses from Ebay. I'll have a play. Could use them for flowers and insects, if nothing else! For fluorescence, though, I figure I can probably use green and red, maybe cyan, astronomy filters for the emission side. I have blue LEDs for excitation....

I hope that you do not LOOK into the eyepieces - because the images indicate that direct UV reaches the eyepieces. Re: Citizen Microscopy
I gave up on astronomy/astrophotography because the skies here are awful, and because I had to do it all from an open window (problematic!), and because I couldn't cope with the window open in cold weather (when it's more likely the skies are clear). It's not necessarily true that you have to buy ex...

I would check with the seller that the iris is in good working order...

Re: Nikon 50X objective with iris
- just means it doesn't matter. A max 0.85 n.a. oil objective will not care one bit about the difference between coverslip glass and oil. But that would depend on the mounting medium? If it was an aqueous sample a cover glass would be needed and the cover glass thickness would matter? I have a feel...
