Re: Amoeba parasitized by the fungus Amoebophilus

To all: thanks for the nice comments. @MichaelG: parasitism by this fungus on amoebae is pretty rare; nature is full of wonders! A couple of notes: -the oval objects trailing behind the amoeba are actually conidia which contain spores -the question of why the conidia aren't just eaten by the amoeba ...

Amoeba parasitized by the fungus Amoebophilus

A couple of years ago, I saw for the first time an amoeba parasitized by the fungus Amoebophilus . Just recently, I made a collection in which there were many amoebae parasitized by this fungus. A photo of one amoeba is shown below. amoeba_fungus-1.jpg You can see the spores of the fungus trialing o...

Two species of the filamentous desmid Hyalotheca

I have been seeing Hyalotheca in large numbers in my recent collections. This is a filamentous desmid in which individual desmid cells stack one on top of the other to produce long filaments. Hyalotheca is also distinguished by having a thick mucilaginous sheath surrounding the cell body and there a...

Pompholyxophrys, another scaly amoeba

I show a photograph of the amoeba Pompholyxophrys . This interesting amoeba, which I had never seen before, is related to the common Nuclearia . As you can see, the amoeba is covered with siliceous round structures called perles. Delicate filiopoda extend through the perles to capture prey, and the ...

Re: My Zeiss Microscopes

Jochen, I am continually impressed at how you repurpose old Zeiss gear for new purposes, like a flash unit from an old lamp house. Over the years, I have obtained bits and pieces of old Zeiss parts and have wondered either what they are or how they might be used. Not parting with any of it has been ...

Re: Cochliopodium bilimbosum, an amoeba covered in scales

Thanks to all for your kind comments. @macnmotion: You may have seen this amoeba but just not noticed it. I think they are pretty common, as I have seen them in collections I have made from several different ponds. They are small amoebae that at low power (16x with 12.5x oculars in my case) don't ap...

Cochliopodium bilimbosum, an amoeba covered in scales

In a recent collection, I observed a number of individuals of the amoeba Cochliopodium bilimbosum. This is an interesting amoeba because it has a hump-like cell body and an advancing, flattened pseudopod. Small pseudopods can extend from the front of the large flattened pseudopod. The cell body cont...

Re: The "water net", Hydrodictyon

Hi Don,

Thanks for your comment. When you pull a sample out, you can tell it is mesh-like and not individual strands like other filamentous algae. Usually you also have to tear off a big from a larger mass to place on a slide for observation.

The "water net", Hydrodictyon

This is the common freshwater alga Hydrodictyon, also know as the water net. This alga can form very large, net-like colonies of interconnected cells; I have had them grow in the collection jars by my window. The cells also have large vacuoles. I am showing a photo taken with DIC (objective is a 40x...

Information on the "Old" Zeiss DIC System for Finite Microscopes

I just read a fascinating and extremely informative post on the German microscopy forum concerning the "old" DIC system on the finite series of Zeiss microscopes. The tube-dwelling ciliate Stichotricha

The ciliated protist shown in the video is Stichotricha. It lives in a tube or lorica and contracts into this lorica when disturbed. While only a single individual is shown in this video, Stichotricha are often found in colonies.
