Now I understand! I hooked up an AA battery for a bit and it worked. It does look a bit sharper when it runs. A bit less grainy, to be more precise.
Totally not worth the effort! But at least I know now. Thanks!

Zeiss Glarex projector screen - what is the motor used for?
So I scored a cheap Zeiss Glarex, nice when having an audience without the hassle of setting up a camera and laptop. It works fine as is, but what eludes me is what the motor is for. It came without a power supply, so I can't fiddle with it to understand what it does. I only found some badly transla...

Nice view ! is the refractometer in use, or just a collector's item ? 50/50 I'm a hobby brewer. Mostly beer and mead. For beer the hand refractometer left of it works fine, but for mead it tops out. A hydrometer works fine or could have bought another one with a higher scale... buuut, who are we ki...

Thanks cesarius, I appreciate it. :) Don't need no 3d printer just a press and some forstner bits Too late! Black friday is over and now I have a 3D printer. I also don't have the right size forstner anyway and for it not to look and work half arsed, a 3D printer or a lathe would have been the optim...

Re: What microscope has this style?
You buy a $15,000 device, and doesn't want to sell you a part because he's afraid you might build your own.. right.
That's only more reason to build your own then isn't it?

Re: The easiest microscope to tweak, modify
Professional high-quality electron microscopes are much cooler than the usual desktop microscopes that we use at school. I used a school-type telescope so much when my son and I tried to study the stars. But when they found photos from powerful telescopes, this is heaven and earth. It is a pity, of...

Re: Red dot of light in pictures. How to get rid of it?
I'm not using any indicators or red lights, so that can't be it, nor can it be seen if that was the case I think. I tried positioning it higher, but even going as far as lifting it out and above of the phototube 5 cm from the bottom of the adapter still shows it. Removing the adapter and aiming the ...

Red dot of light in pictures. How to get rid of it?
I'm having a bit of a problem that I get a red light in many of my pictures. I only see it trough my EOS D600 and it's a bit dependent on lighting and magnification how it looks. When I put an eyepiece in the phototube I don't see it and when I close the iris of camera adapter (NDPL-1) it also disap...

I don't have a 4x objective, but I use the 25x I have more then expected. It's giving me good details in water samples while still having a nice overview of what's around.

Re: A microscope for digital image capturing?
I use a similar adapter as the one in the second video. NDPL-1(2x) and a Canon 600D. What I see through my 10x eyepieces and what I see on the monitor is comparable in magnification.
This is what I shot with a 40x objective.

Re: The easiest microscope to tweak, modify
Leitz has 170 objectives though, as opposed to the standard 160 of the other brands, so you're bound to that brand if an objective needs to be replaced or added.

I am that friend with all the tools everyone wants to borrow from.
Sadly no one around with a 3D printer, but that has been on my wish list for a while now, maybe next year.
I did find some macro extension tubes for a few bucks, so I'll try that out.

I'll give it a go then, but since that one costs more then what I paid for the complete camera adapter, I'll try my luck again on alixpress.
I already have a blue filter fitted, but the yellowing in this case was mostly because I had the wrong camera settings.

It's too bad I didn't record sooner since it made multiple attempts at the paramecium. Sadly, after hitting record this was the last one and didn't come back.

Re: Zeiss Opton Stativ W
Just got the camera adapter delivered today from china, so I fiddled around a bit with it. I borrowed my brothers Canon 600D, but since I have zero experience with DSLR's, i'll have to figure that out too. Sadly I can't get it parfocal. The adapter can be extended to some degree, but not far enough....

Re: 60x objective for swift sw380T
When I look at pictures of the sw380 it seems like it has the standard Chinese objectives, so I guess it should be fine? I've seen those on alliexpress for like 20 euro for the 60x model. Same factory, just unbranded and cheaper.

That's interesting, thanks! I'll have to experiment with that sometime then and see how it compares. Maybe it'll produce some nice pictures once I get my camera adapter delivered.

50x Oil objective with iris diaphragm intended use?
I happen to have an Olympus DPlan 50 oil ojective that doesn't really get any use here, because.. well, oil.
What is this actually used for in a professional setting and why the iris diaphragm? Why use this over a 40x or 60x dry objective?

Yep! Printed out and everything already.
Too bad I couldn't find the technical drawing anywhere, would have made made the disassembly a lot less nerve wrecking since I didn't know what to expect. Luckily all went well.
If anyone knows of its existence, I would love to have it.

Thanks! Yes, it's a bit of a mixed bag, but for the money I didn't pay for it I'd say it was well worth the investment. Under the stage is the condenser for phase contrast and bright-field. The knobs are for centering the rings. (2 for each) Well.. one knob is missing. Here is a nice article a...

Zeiss Opton Stativ W
Thought I share some (badly shot) pictures of my first microscope. It has sat in the basement storage of a lab since the 70's and with a big move they had to throw out a lot of old stuff, (and yeah, those olympus objectives were fished out of the dumpster) So from the lab basement, it resided for ye...
