Re: Ciliate and diatoms

Yes it is, Chilodonella's are known to be found with a belly full of diatoms, I encountered one with 7 whole diatoms and 2 partially digested inside of it. The diatoms will remain active inside of it for a while. After finding one with a belly full of diatoms, I added a drop of 70% alcohol to the co...

Re: How to stop bacteria growth in jar of pond water?

Hello , so I recently tried running a similar experiment at home to determine what levels would inhibit bacterial growth without harming protist, found that sucralose in certain quantities will act as a bacteriostatic.... Unfortunately it can also decimate the protist population. I will an article b...

ASC Question

Is there such a thing as an ASC Plan Achro or APO, I found regular achromats but no plan apo or plan acro.?
How do they work, and is there any trade off in using them with certain techniques like filters or stains.? I would imagine a Gram stain would require sunglasses to avoid blindness 😅

They apparently quite like acidic water so they are quite happy in bogs and such.

Hello, so the reason I asked is because I run into some available options listing a #0 as an option here's what I found..... But I wanted to see if anyone had any experience with them. #0 vs #1 coverslips

Hello again, im interested in finding out if using #0 coverslips instead of the standard #1 will cause the image quality to suffer? And is there any online store where that sells #0 covers for a reasonable price?
Thank you.

Hunting for Desmids

Hello and thank you for taking your time in helping. Im trying to hunt for Desmids but so far have been unsuccessful. I normally gather my samples from retention ponds and streams , found many Ciliates and Algae but no Desmids like Closterium. Is there a giveaway sign or environment where they can b...

Re: Condenser Question

I think I saw a swing out lens at the bottom of one of the condenser photos you have included here. You asked what the swing out filter was for. If that is what you were asking about I have an answer for you. It is rarely seen on today's scopes except for those which are most sophisticated. Swingin...

Fuzzy Image

I cant seem to figure out why im getting a better quality with a non compatible objective! My platform is a Microstar IV, came with Neoplan objectives. My 10x .25 cat #1756 objective produces a somewhat fuzzy image, specially when compared to a 10x .25 DIN objective that I salvaged from an older AbC...

Re: Condenser Question

So I completed the swab, and was left with a couple of questions. 1. The 1087 holder fit perfectly into the 1970, however that was not the case the other way around, it seems like the inner lip diameter of the original 1970 holder is wider than the diameter of the upper stage of the 1087 and so the ...

Ideonella sakaiensis

Hi guys, Im interested in finding Ideonella sakaiensis to start a culture and possibly experiment with some plastics, from what I gathered they are pretty small and so a gram stain is a must. Does anyone have any experience with Ideonella sakaiensis ? Advise is greatly appreciated.

Re: Condenser Question

Thank you, Will definitely be doing the swap, now the diameter is 32mm, does that mean I will need a 34,33 or 35 mm filter so that it can sit on the aux holder?

Condenser Question

Hello, I need some help on figuring out which condenser and how to use it. My Microstar IV came with an Abbe 1970, it does not have a slot for a filter and so I opted to purchase a AO 1087 since it comes with the slot to insert Stop Patch filters. The 1087 comes with a swing in concave lens below th...

Re: How does the Reichert neoplan 50X 0.80 oil compare to the 100X neoplan and plan achro?

That could be it, So far I've purchased Karter Scientific from Amazon with the following specs Glass Blank Slides: 1" x 3" x 0.04" (25.4x76.2x1mm) Glass Cover Slips: 7/8 x 7/8 x 0.006" (18x18x0.13mm) Will have to measure to be sure, although I haven't encountered the issue with the 160 objectives ju...

Re: How does the Reichert neoplan 50X 0.80 oil compare to the 100X neoplan and plan achro?

I would love to give you an answer but, I have not been able to obtain working distance with my 100x Neoplan, at least with a cover glass that is, theres just not enough room for the objective to clear the cover glass, regardless of how thin I prepare the slide sample. Have you encounter the same is...

@Apochronaut, when you say that the 1970 could be used with oil immersion, does that mean oil on top of the condenser below the slide or just objective immersion with the 100x?

Thats encouraging, do you happen to know or recommend some of the sites or stores where said extras can be purchased?
