Re: Hello to one & all
I'm in my second year of sampling aquatic invertebrates from local streams and find that for my purposes, direct observation (with stereoscope) in a petri dish, or a slide wet mount on a compound microscope, is adequate without getting into the more elaborate fixing/staining/mounting protocols. Gett...

Draparnaldia
I am sampling local streams for invertebrates and algae, and came across this alga 10 days ago. I only found one rock with obvious growth in the pool I was in, and it had what I took to be two different types - the filamentous one is Draparnaldia, and the spherical one I thought was probably some sp...

I know this is not a new problem - see for instance https://www.microbehunter.com/microscopy-forum/viewtopic.php?f=8&t=15739 - but leaving this kind of offensive junk up for days has a serious impact on my interest in being associated with the forum. Re: Microscope storage/portability options
I made a box for my Wild M3B which I am reasonably comfortable using for transport in the car - box is made from 1/4" hardwood plywood on a hardwood frame, hardware is from Penn-Elcom fastened with 3/16" pop rivets. The base has a full 1" layer of foam with a second layer cut out to capture the base...

Re: Why is photo sharpening necessary
I believe I could get better than this by fine tuning the photo port tube length I can well understand how the wrong C-mount adapter would result in poor images - every camera lens-system has a flange focal length which is the distance from the mounting flange of the lens on the camera to the plane...

Re: Stalked ciliate on mayfly nymph
Update - My stream project for the-now-past year included 78 samples taken from 10 streams in Addison County, Vt, which yielded about 1,000 images, some of which are in a photo album I posted on a website I put up to organize links to some helpful aquatic invert. sites - here . Having working micros...

Why is photo sharpening necessary
Almost all my images benefit from sharpening - I'm using GIMP photo editor. The two images below are a rather extreme example, but the blurry image is much improved by sharpening, without any apparent (to me) degradation. Subject in Hydropsychidae larva. The details derived by the sharpening process...

Re: Wild M3B with Motic 1500.3 photo-bridge
I ordered a custom phototube from RAFCamera to replace my plumbing parts, and received it yesterday. It is a nicely machined piece of anodized aluminum made to my spec. From my testing so far, it seems to be exactly parfocal with viewing through eyepieces. Below are images of my spec, the adapter, t...

Re: issues w/ Nikon trinocular eyepiece tube " F " (trinocular head)
[re. 'F' head tall/short chimney] either can be completely unscrewed from the head I had an 'F' head with the tall chimney and could not unscrew it from the body/dovetail. Since the binocular viewing part is rotated to change from eyepiece to photoport, there must be stops that limit both ends of t...

Re: Wild M3B with Motic 1500.3 photo-bridge
I put together a plumbing-parts tube made of 1-1/4" and 1-1/2" sink drain, using the c-mount base that came on the Motic photobridge which conveniently is 1-1/4" ID. The D10NLC OD is 38mm = 1-1/2", so that connects to the 1-1/2" OD drain with a slip-over rubber tube. Total cost $6.49. It is closely ...

Re: Wild M3B with Motic 1500.3 photo-bridge
Apologies if I am mis-reading your post … Michael - I do have the C to M4/3 adapter - what I need is the spacer tube between the photobridge and the proper camera position - picture below shows camera in approx. location to capture intermediate image, with the D10NLC attached to the camera. Re: Wild M3B with Motic 1500.3 photo-bridge
Probably easier to just adapt on cheap m42 spacers, an m42 helicoid and an m42 to m4/3 adapter. I will go that route if it turns out there is no suitable adapter from Motic - the post referenced above suggests that such a Motic adapter does exist - just can't find it, yet. Re: Wild M3B with Motic 1500.3 photo-bridge
Just to be clear, you want to direct project onto a c-mount camera? I am using a mirrorless camera without lens - Olympus Pen E-PL7 - with a C-mount to Olympus adapter connected to a lens-less D10NLC 38mm ISO to C-mount. So, no, not a c-mount camera per-se. D10NLC C-mount to 38mm port adapter.jpg

Wild M3B with Motic 1500.3 photo-bridge
I have a new-to-me nice example of a Wild M3B which I am fitting for photography using direct projection. This post https://www.microbehunter.com/microscopy-forum/viewtopic.php?t=7354 describes a method to do that using a Motic 1500.3 photo bridge. I now have one of those, but I need a different ada...

Mount insect to pose for photography
Any suggestions for mounting insects for posing them to photograph? So far I've tried gluing to a toothpick with Elmer's Glue (too long to dry), and cyanoacrylate glue (better). Are there very fine needles? I want to be able to position my subject for various views that aren't possible with whole mo...

Re: Suggestions for travel stereoscope
I have ordered what should be a nice copy of a Wild M3B and will get a foam-lined hardshell case. I know how to do direct-projection camera attachment with the Wild, and I have confidence in the Wild optics. I find a lot of Cycloptics on Ebay, but none of the trinocular attachments, and what I read ...

Re: Suggestions for travel stereoscope
Photography is an important feature for me. I had come to the conclusion that a good case, like a hard-shell music-gear case, was going to be necessary, and that I would opt for a scope that promised good images, using a direct projection approach with a mirrorless camera to keep things as compact a...

Re: Suggestions for travel stereoscope
It appears that the Cambridge SZ6 is a Greenough design - my experience with the Motic SMZ143, a Greenough design, was unsatisfactory for photography. Part of the problem is that the light path coming to the photo port is not perpendicular to the subject, but angled. Does that problem occur with the...
