Re: What happens to aphids on teasel?
my last teasel video of 2022: Thanks for posting, very interesting. We have teasel growing wild here in sw England, (especially in my wild garden - which used to be my veg. garden , , , that is another story !) We had one specimen last year that was nearly twice my height but I did not think to loo...

tomorrow - but have an issue. I'm in Canada, it's still winter, , reasonable density of organisms under these circumstances? Have you recently bought your partner a bunch of flowers :) ! The water in the vase in which they stand should provide some critters. @dtsh suggestion is good. Alternative, a...

Re: Ranching moss piglets
I was hoping to do a short-cut ! ( My 7 year old grand daughter arrived home from school one day last year and told her mother she wanted to see a tardigrade ! She had found a book in the library showing them. ) Looks like it will have to be the wild route for us as well. Some questions then arise :...

The glass beads begged for me to look at them under my microscope ..... Instant light alignment tool ! An interesting effect, I have some of that somewhere, from my tropical fish keeping days, I wonder where I put it !! Just for info. it is not glass! It is an ion exchange resin. The DI on the labe...

they're just too intense and there's no means to dial the light down. That is an advantage of the diy I proposed, it can be achieved by simply** including an extra series resistor to dim (or slightly increase the voltage supply to brighten). The little black object on the edge of the 12v panel is i...

Re: Frontonia? releases massive diatom
Hi, Please forgive me for posting so much lately, but I had to share this. I found what I think is a Frontonia that had ate a massive Diatom. It was moving very slowly until it stayed still. After a few minutes it released the Diatom and immediately came back to life. I found the whole thing so coo...

Theodore Stepanides thought that an old-fashioned oil lamp was good. (as was a 60W Opal bulb) See (~page 70 on): https://archive.org/details/MicroscopePrinciples/page/n69/mode/2up Thank you, nice find. Interesting that as recently as 1947 he is rating an oil flame better than opal electric, both be...

Anyone's guess. If he/she had answered my question about a high contrast moving object or Louise about tissue we might be a bit wiser by now ? I think original (C) wacky baccy was right !

That assumes the 40x even has the ability to focus. It may be too badly damaged already.apochronaut wrote: ↑Thu Jul 21, 2022 3:07 pmHe says he is using .12 coverslips. I don't know of any 40X that won't focus with those.
We just need more info from W W to help plot a path of discovery !

Perhaps a high contrast item, like a thread, on the stage in place of the slide to see if you can see it moving and get idea of the 40x focus point.

Re: 40x doesn't show a clear image.
I can see the sample fine... https://ibb.co/mcXh3Hq The image is a little unclear since I took it with my phone... Firstly I would not play with the 100x objective until we can sort out the 40x (and/or any other problems !), the 100x is very tricky to use at the best of times and you may well cause...

Re: calibrate my Swift 380T
May I ask what does calibrating a microscope mean? Good question! I wondered what OP meant as well, since instructions for stage micrometer slides are widespread on the web. Perhaps it means calibrating the Z-axis, ie, up-down - focus travel, - depth measurement, like how thick is that diatom :) No...

Well, pale greenish ! :) Over the past year and more I have seen many orange spotted ones but only read about other types.
