Re: Critters in loricas help
The way I was looking at it was the critter was in the process of forming a lorica. I don't know how long it takes to make a home to live in.
I can see what you mean looking at the second video it does resemble a deformed stentor species.
Thanks.

Hypotrichia ID help
A couple of hypotrichia that I need help with. After going through the images of hypotrichia species inside the Foissner and Berger book I think this might be a Histriculus vorax. The book states it appears broadly rounded and sometimes notched with caudal cirri the same length as the marginal cirri...

Re: Where do you find Stentors?
Since beginning this hobby four months ago I have found four species of stentor and they have all been found on dead leaves lying in the detritus at the bottom of ponds. I haven't found any correlation between sunny and shaded areas Check out my stentor videos at https://www.flickr.com/photos/154534...

Actinosphaerium eichhornii
While searching through one of my samples from a local pond I was shocked to find this heliozoan, it was pretty large I would say at least 500µm in diameter. I think it's a Actinosphaerium eichhornii. Video 1 (100X) - https://www.flickr.com/photos/154534235@N07/51144280566/in/datetaken/ Video 2 (200...

With a larger telescope you can see six moons of Saturn, 4 moons of Jupiter, even see the moons of Neptune. And don't forget observing the red spot on Jupiter.

If it wasn't for Bruce I wouldn't have learnt as much as I have, as you say such an asset to this forum.
I'm so glad I found a Ophryoglena, what a great critter, I've scrutinized the second video and i can see the mouth at 0.44 seconds so I think this is what you mean.

Need a little help on this one please. It was pretty large about 180µm cannot tell you where it was found as it's inside my specimen tank and it could be anywhere. It reminds me of a nassula omata I've seen them before but they were a lot more purple in colour then this one. I watched it for about 1...

Stentor muelleri?
As I'm not very well at the moment I decided to revisit some of my earlier observations and I came across this stentor, I think it maybe a Stentor muelleri. I think a moniliform macronucleus (bead like structure) is seen in various portions of the video, It appears colourless and I don't think there...

Ophrydiidae?
I’ve spent the last few days trying to decide what genus these critters belong to, and I’m still struggling to be honest and need help. They were all from the same sample of pond water that contained decaying leaves. There were about 20 of them but they were all solitary, apart from the pair in the ...

Trichodina pediculus
Captured this wonderful ciliate in my sample yesterday. It looks like a Trichodina pediculus. While identifying this little critter I noticed it normally attaches itself to fish and hydras. It was from a lake at RSPB Langford Lowfields I have never seen fish there but the lakes are pretty big and at...

Vaginicola tincta?
While searching through a sample I came across this wonderful Vaginicola species. I was gobsmacked by it's lorica, it has a brown tinge and looks like a honey pot with ridges in the lorica, simply amazing how this little ciliate can build this wonderful home. While looking through Alfred Kahl book o...

I have bought a new eyepiece and connected it to my phone so I now have higher magnification hence the videos are a little more detailed.
Because of the better videos can you tell which one it is T.truncatum or T. pituitosum

I'm hoping this is a Bursaria truncatella that I found lurking in one of my samples from a canal near to where I live. There was quite a few of them in the sample. I have a video of a suctorian I've seen today and really need a little help to make up my mind. Is it a tokophrya. I did consider Homalozoon vermiculare but all the images I've seen have a large black mass in the anterior region. my specimen didn't have this and appeared fatter then the samples I've looked at. I have have just read that H. vermiculare carries some toxicysts at his front, which are fired on the p...

Another strange one I have found and cannot find anything that looks similar. It's about 150µm in length and was the only one I found. Critter was found in the same sample as I found the trachelophyllid the other day so a mixture of soil/moss/pond water Video 1 (200X) - https://www.flickr.com/photos...
