Re: The notoriously difficult task of identifying hypotrichs to genus level
Thanks for trying Bruce! Good to know about Holosticha, thank you. Going forward, I’ll be sure to find ways to improve video quality.

The notoriously difficult task of identifying hypotrichs to genus level
I have some footage of a hypotrich: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=aYZ2EfsBIsI (Crappy YouTube quality will be the end of me) I think I can just make out a midventral complex, which I believe would put this ciliate with the urostyloids. I do not have enough knowledge on hypotrichs to go much further....

What is going on here?
These two peritrich ciliates seem to have an organism(?) protruding from them. I am not sure if this is a seperate ciliate, some sort of fungus, or part of the peritrichs themselves, nor have I seen anything like this before. The oral cilia on the peritrichs does not appear to be moving. Perhaps it ...

Didinium sp. ?
This ciliate resembles one from the genus Didinium, but I did not see a posterior ciliary band. It was quite difficult to film because it moved pretty fast.

Re: Finally: Paramecium!!
I have the same amscope model as you except with a trinocular port. I have been using a usb camera (md130) to record, but the quality never compares to that when looking through the lenses. And with darkfield, the specimen comes out extremely overexposed. I have been considering purchasing a phone a...

2 Questions
1. This ciliate first came across as malformed or injured in some way, but I did notice it resembles Paradileptus. The video is not the best quality and I was not able to capture a very good view of the cilia structure, so I know any identification beyond "ciliate" is unlikely. https://www.youtube.c...

Holophrya sp. ?
Was feeling lazy and uploaded the footage without cutting any of the jerky stage movements out. Sorry about that.
The question is as the title says: is this ciliate a member of the genus Holophrya?

Stentor sp. ? and macronucleus troubles
Having some trouble identifying the shape of this guy's macro nucleus. I have circled what I believe might be the moniliform macronucleus, but I am not certain. Have I missed the mark? If so, could someone please tell me where the macronucleus is? And of course its shape. https://www.youtube.com/wat...

Stentor of some sort
Hello, what is this? I think it is a stentor (actually, the more I look into it, the more likely suctoria seems), but it is unlike any stentor I have ever seen before. Found outside in a tub of freshwater water full of growing plants.

Mold from the stems of some flowers in a vase
This is one of the first times I have (intentionally) put mold under the microscope. This was some "fuzzy" white looking mold growing on the stem of one of the flowers in a vase + some of the water the flowers were in. I am no expert on mold, but I found the outcome pretty interesting. If anyone has...

Re: Identifying a few ciliates
These were found in a soil/pond water/moss sample. The pond is presumably freshwater, but it is very near the ocean so I wouldn't be surprised if it was a bit brackish. 1. I have included some photos of what I think is the mouth (although I could be wrong). If it is the mouth, it does seem to point ...

Identifying a few ciliates
I am attempting to dive into the world of ciliate identification. I have mostly used Foissner and Berger's "A user-friendly guide to the ciliates" to try to identify these guys. Needing help on some of these, so feel free to make suggestions! 1. Nassula ornata 2. Homalozoon vermiculare? or maybe Sti...

Found in a freshwater duck pond. I have come to believe it is of the Loxodes genus, although I do not have enough experience to say for certain. Any help is appreciated.

Re: Another person has observed their first tardigrade!
It did take me a little while to find this one. I had taken a sample from the same area in the past, and just found a few rotifers. This time, the sample was super dense with amoebas, ciliates, rotifers, etc. plus this tardigrade! It can be really hit or miss sometimes, but moss is always a good sig...

Thank you for the help,
Sadly I do not have any full body pictures, nor do I still have the sample. I am now fairly certain it is not mosquito but Chironomidae, but have little knowledge of genus or species.

Zooplankton and Some Lovely Diatoms
Hello all! Here is what I believe to be some sort of zooplankton. It was quite large (about the size of an ant). I also included some diatoms. I am particularly interested in the triangular shaped diatom. I think it is licmophora, but any further explanation would be appreciated. --pardon the poor i...
