Re: The unusual rotifer Cupelopagis vorax

Something you might consider, if you have another opportunity with this guy, is to put the crossed polars to him and see what happens. Partially crossed polarizers can really add interest and color to images of things like tardigrades, cladocera, copepods, etc. (which I'm sure Tim is aware of, but I...

Re: The unusual rotifer Cupelopagis vorax

Tim, you're on a roll, man -- that's another critter that's totally new to me, plus your reminder to float coverslips on pondwater samples is a valuable one. It's a great technique every freshwater microscopist needs to think about.

A useful site for lots of pictures of rotifers to help in identifying them (as well as other microlife): https://www.plingfactory.de/pling.html
That's become a favorite resource for me too. 8-)

Re: I thought it was a tardigrade...

How very interesting! Like you, I've never heard of or seen this one before and I can only imagine your surprise and delight to discover it was something other than a 'mere' tardigrade. Congrats on a very nice job of tracking it down and IDing it, and of imaging it so well too. Thanks for posting.

Diatoms are interesting dead or alive! And planktonic diatoms are the most beautiful of all. Lovely images!

Don't worry about getting the name wrong, it's no big deal, particularly for those new to the hobby. In fact, the most effective way of getting an ID on an unknown critter is to purposely call it by a wrong name - you'll get 20 people correcting it while being lucky to get 1 answer to "what is this?...

That's right, I also turn the wrong screws every once in a while - argh! Another good reason to get practiced and comfortable re-centering the stage (and condenser too!).

Re: Centering a Zeiss circular stage

Howdy Tim! I love the Zeiss rotating biological stage so much I've adapted a couple of them to my Oly BH-2s, and center them almost constantly since they need re-centering with objective changes. I've never used a reticle eyepiece or any other aid, just do it by eye. My method is to center a target ...

I always thought of desmids as on the short list of very prettiest things to see in our microscopes, and this species is one of the most interesting. AND one of the most difficult to get good images of, ask me how I know.

Your shots are doing it justice! :ugeek:

Fascinating video. The suctorians are lovely. especially the 1st one with the large lorica. Most lorica I've seen are more tube-like and closer against the body, not bulb-like. Very interesting!

This thread really ought to be made a 'sticky', as Rod did a fantastic job of documenting his work and the result is a treasure trove for the beginning diatomist. And the world needs more diatomists.
