Re: Is There A Hydra Doctor In The House?
Here are a couple others that appear more diseased or injured. Very strange, have never seen this kind of thing before.

Is There A Hydra Doctor In The House?
Took a New Years Day peek into a micro aquarium and got a bit of a surprise: growths on several Hydras like I've never seen before. I understand Hydra can reproduce sexually, as well as by budding, whereas some individuals develop testes, others ovaries, and still others ... both. Anyway, the testes...

Wonderful series! I always like seeing and comparing different lighting schemes. What is your scope again? Also like to hear how you get oblique, as your approach really brings out the detail!

Just for the record, I'm not having an E600 built; this is just one I happen to have cluttering up the place.

Re: Objective quality opinions
I have a Nikon E600, definitely recent infinity optics. The threaded portion of objectives measure just over 25.03mm according to a Harbor Freight digital caliper and my clumsy use of it. If desired, I can test whether objectives from my Olympus BX45 will interchange. http://i70.photobucket.com/albu...

AO Spencer Model 28LF, Yet Another Stereo
No, I'm not obsessed with this family of stereoscopic microscopes. At least, I don't think I am. But dang it, the swing arm had my curiosity piqued so I made a ridiculous offer and the seller accepted so now I have three very similar old stereos. But it's no hardship, each has cost just a little ove...

Charles, I really appreciate your taking the time and effort to share your collection and acquisitions with us. Besides just plain fun eye candy to gaze at, I get to learn new things all the time, often things I most likely never would otherwise like the flip in analyzer. So thanks man, I'll hoist a...

Re: POL Fun With Citric Acid
Yes, "doing acid" is lots of fun! It had been a while since I did any of this, and Rod reminded me of it with a recent post. I have spent many an enjoyable hour just tripping on kaleidoscopic crystals under crossed polarizers, almost like the video games of microscopy.

POL Fun With Citric Acid
Nuttin special for sure, but had a bit of fun making crystals while de-cluttering, straightening up, and reorganizing the lab today. One thing's a given: with crystals you can never know what you're gonna come up with. The one run of crystallization running such a straight path was pretty amusing to...

Ah, thanks - 'Optovar' is the name given the magnification changer then. Hear good things about 'em.
But you didn't say ... how'd you achieve the removable turret and change model numbers (and what was it before)?

Re: Latest iteration of my Zeiss Standard
You know what, on second thought may I ask a couple questions? You say "an arm upgrade has turned my microscope into a Zeiss 18! It now has a removable turret..." What model was it before, and do I understand correctly that you replaced the curving spine to arrive at the removable turret? Also, what...

Very nice images, thanks for posting. I have spent many an hour gazing intently into the eyepiece at such scenery in my time! I always thought it was kind of fun running around at night with one eye totally dazzled all to hell.

Knowing that you used a phone camera and AO achro objective though, I am amazed by your image quality. Without knowing that, I would have guessed that image was produced by much better objective and a DSLR! This is exactly what has always knocked me out about Rod's photomicrography -- he gets nicer...

Well, not that far in the past. These were taken in 2014 and are citric acid, although you may call it smushed up vitamin C supplement pills if you like. http://i70.photobucket.com/albums/i104/Arky704/Micro%20Stuff/Photomicrography/4-5-14%20magnesium%20sulphate%2007_zpssbokadow.jpg Looks good enough...

Wow, that last one came out really nice -- a leaf! How are you going about preparing your crystals? I've been in a rut lately, every time I try to get crystals my solution dries out transparent and featureless. I've tried drying them at ambient temperature, on the warming plate, in the fridge, still...

Oh I wouldn't be too hard on myself if I were you, I'd say you did splendidly! Re: 100% Natural Canada Balsam Fir Gum
I began buying and using the very same stuff a few years ago, and so far it seems to work just fine. Be aware that it takes a long while to harden, as in few months or more, whereas migrating cover slips and the resulting sticky mess taught me that storing slides vertically may not be best. As a dir...

VERY nice! It isn't easy to observe the patterns on the carapace, and they show clearly on this image. Also rare to see color detail in the eye.
