Some early tests with nikon J1, mitutoyo 5x plus raynox DCR250 on bellows Shot jpg and just some mild processing Edit: Forgot to say these are around 15 image stacks.. :) https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/53451911895_3c5352092a_b.jpg https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/53451620263_b0528b367c_k.jpg

Re: How to best photograph parasitoid wasp collection for ID

Thank you for the feedback, I run some tests placing the sample in propilenglicol with a coverslip on top to keep the subject from moving, as long as the coverslip is fully submerged there are not unwanted reflections, I am using difused reflected light. Some of this samples will need to go later on...

How to best photograph parasitoid wasp collection for ID

Hi, I have to photograph the parasitoid wasp collection for the University of Azores, right now they are separated by families plus a spieces ID number. Families range from medium sized Braconidae, Ichneumonidae to small ones like Figitidae and Eulophidae (down to 1mm aprox). All this samples are st...

Re: I received my Nikon CFN PlanApo 60/1.40 Oil, is completely ruined

It serms to be magnification to N.A. ratio dependent . Interesting way of seeing it, never though of it like that. I will try to run a focus stack with both lenses before I leave but I am going to be quite busy the next few days. I am more interested in final image results than just how single fram...

Re: I received my Nikon CFN PlanApo 60/1.40 Oil, is completely ruined

My £30 Nikon CFN PlanApo 100x 1.40 arrived today, and it is in much better shape than I could ever have hoped for. The front lens is pristine, and I can't see any defects internally besides a little dust on the rear element. A quick test with a calibration slide revealed a very sharp, contrasty ima...

Re: I received my Nikon CFN PlanApo 60/1.40 Oil, is completely ruined

These are very good news indeed, thanks!!!
I would have probably permanently damaged the lens of I had tried to get that far myself
As you say it was full of oil, so much oil I did not have much hope you could get this far either..I am glad I was wrong.. :D

Re: sony cameras

I'm confused. The Sony a5100 is completely mirrorless. It has no moving parts as far as I know and should not be capable of causing any kind of vibration. I admit I haven't used it at 100x though. Did you mean to write this or were you thinking of a different camera? The A5100 is mirrorless but has...

Re: sony cameras

I have found out that the shutter shock on the A5100 (and other cameras) will make water samples move due to vibrations going to the slide through the immersion oil, no problem with air lenses. This is why I would recommend a camera with full electronic shutter for Oil objectives, I found a very che...

A couple of pictures with Nikon CFN 100/1.25 and Nikon J1

Hi, Few weeks ago I came across a cheap Nikon J1 (30€ with shipping) and I did some tests. There are a few things I love about this "old" camera like full electronic shutter and glass filter in front of the sensor (no dust) but also some things I do not like; no video without a nikon 1 objective and...

Agree with other comments above - wonderful clean and high resolution photographs.
Getting a clean stack with this high NA lenses needs lots of retouching; being an APO lens does help a lot.

Thanks, I added a short video link that may help with the ID, also run a BF stack I have to work with it, but the diatom had broke by then under the coverslip pressure

Polarized live Diatom (Pleurosigma sp)

Hi, In the last few weeks I could not expend much time with scope and when I did I did not manage to get results worth sharing. A new stack, adapting to the microscope is proving to be quite challenging. Preparing the samples and working with live moving subjects. It took me several times until I co...

Re: Proper combination of objective and eyepiece

Coming from a bellow set up and used to direct projection I never understood this objective/eyepiece magnification combo; looks like a gimmick to improve sales to me. When taking pictures I normally I just specify magnification on sensor To me a 5X image is just that, a 5X no matter what camera I us...

Re: PZO DIC on a BHT microscope, possible?

Can someone tell me what's inside these things? I'm assuming the condenser is a rotatable polarizer. I don't know what the slit condenser has, maybe that's phase contrast? And the MIP5, is that a set of 5 DIC prisms with a turret? This set is for sale on e-bay. I'm just curious for now. That is a g...

Re: PZO DIC on a BHT microscope, possible?

Today was a good day, I received both the KIP2 which looks new and also a few Nikon PlanApos... :D These are preliminary tests (I smashed the poor thing); condenser just placed on top fo the BHT condenser holder, MIP5 far from centred and system not parfocal. I tested the CFN 10, 20 and 40 planApos ...

Re: PZO DIC on a BHT microscope, possible?

So PZO head dovetail is around 44mm, since Olympus head dovetail is 42mm? That is not good news for a Nikon owner like me, who has 48.5mm head dovetails. Maybe it is easy for you, height could remind the same. The MIP5 to microscope adapter would just need to be a sleeve going around the 43mm MIP5 ...

Re: PZO DIC on a BHT microscope, possible?

I rather use an adapter than modify mip5 dovetail, pzo dovetail is bigger. BH2 Trinocular head fits nicely inside PZO scope, just adding some tape around bh2 dovetail will make it 100% aligned. I may buy a pzo biolar (200$~)and leave the mip5 there, just switch the trinocular head from the BHT to th...

Re: PZO DIC on a BHT microscope, possible?

No I don’t think there is a room for an adapter. You need leave a space for nomarski prism moving in z axis. In my test, I need moving the prism to very bottom to get the even pictures. If you insert a adapter between mpi5 and microscope, you can not move the prism to right place. If you insist , y...

Re: PZO DIC on a BHT microscope, possible?

No I didn't. I didn't modify the dovetail of mpi5. In my opinion, as long as there is no tilt, a small amount of axis shifting will not affect the image quality. After all, the F.N. of splanapo is 26.5. The principle should be similar to that of tilt-shift lens. As you can see the shape of those do...

Re: PZO DIC on a BHT microscope, possible?

I think pzo dic can fit bh2 https://youtu.be/TQbKw3CeZ58 Thanks for the videos. Did you modify the Mip5 dovetail? It fits inside but it is not properly aligned; mip5 dovetail is slighly wider and shape is different. I would say is is missaligned by something in between 1 and 2 mm This is the reason...

Re: PZO DIC on a BHT microscope, possible?

Uhhhhh! I am thinking. Why not just buy a Biolar microscope body? You can probably even get the nice 100 watt version with a 5 nosepiece. I almost buy one from Rusia but seller was new and did not trust the postal service. Problem with PZO is finding a trinocular head, they are rare. But I asked th...

With Zerene stacker; is one of its features. When focus stacking more than 30 images or so you can get good synthetic stereo pairs

Polarized midge larvae

I did a whole series trying my polarizing set up, on top of the source light there is a 52mm polarizer, then in the middle of the swing out condenser a clear (or frosted) plastic CD protector from a CD box working as a retarder (kind of) and just below the camera the analyzer on a 30 to 37mm step up...

Re: Using aluminium tape to make spacers for water sample specimens

The foil tape idea is pretty clever, IMO. Pretty clean mount vs. something like Vaseline, with just a bit of water escaping at first.... Thanks Pete; yesterday I tried the vaseline and although it works I kind of prefer the aluminium foil. One advantage of the Vaseline though is you can press it to...

Re: Optical Quality of inexpensive objectives

Good glass is expenssive, but second hand market is full of great opportunities. Objectives that were worth over a 1000$ can be had for 100$ or so. For viewing a good Plan Achromat is perfectly fine but when you do focus stacking you realize how important is to have a good lens to start with, an APO...
