Re: Succession on a microslide

Thanks Don
I have changed the thumbnail to this video.
it now showing a an bacilllus with an endospore. This amazed me
I knew about refractile spores but I have never seen one like this in living bacterium.

I accidentally found anintermediate amoeba

I was checking early videos I had captured from my DIC microscope and this was the very first. It was poorly lit etc but I had no clue what I had recorded. After all this time (years) I finally saw the same image in *The ponds of Simmelried" a wonderful book made by world experts in the field. It tu...

Succession on a microslide

Hello all
I put a drop of pond water on a slide and incubated it in a fridge.
I was so surprised at what I saw I had to make a little video to show it.

Re: What happens to aphids on teasel?

I forgot to say the the video I posted last year about protozoa and teasel was due to the presence of plant debris trapped in the water pockets. I have no idea if the different substrates leads to different protozoa. I only noticed the water pockets by chance and an internet search showed just how m...

Re: What happens to aphids on teasel?

Hi Dennis
I first planted teasel seeds in my back garden 30 years ago. The idea was to attract goldfinches to feed on the seed heads.
So I am guilty of seeing teasel as very familiar :?

I appreciate the feedback and thank you for your comments
All the best

What happens to aphids on teasel?

Hi all Its been a while after many viruses here is my last teasel video of 2022: Pi0iQPuUzdU A paper from the USA in the 1980s describes how no larvae were found in 1000 teasel samples. So it seems that a rich food source and plenty of rainfall is needed for this to happen if any one wants to read t...

Leitz Orthoplan DIC

Hi all
I have just made a short video about my old Orthoplan with Smith DIC showing how
polarisation angle directly affects the image which in this case were my cheek cells.

Re: Protozoa from Teasel

Thanks for the feedback on this video
I appreciate the helpful comments
I have recently taken samples this current year (2022) from Teasel pools
and am now thinking about making another video
The microscope system I use is an old Leitz Smith DIC.

Re: Protozoa from Teasel

Thanks for those kind words Javier
That type of coordinated complex movement fascinates me.
I missed a really interesting teasel sample this summer due an atypical warm spell. Lots of aphids fell into the water but it dried out before I could get a sample.
Oh well

Protozoa from Teasel

Hi
I found some teasel in the garden containing pools of water collected between pairs of leaves
I looked at a drop of this water and monitored how the protozoa changed over time

Re: Bloom of euglenoids and its cause?

Thank you for the kind comments.
I must admit I was overwhelmed by the numbers and diversity of protozoa in the sample.
There was a followup bloom of Daphnia which ate all of the euglenoids a few days later.
I am just finishing off a video about it.
Thanks again

Bloom of euglenoids and its cause?

After a difficult year with a fried data hard drive I have just discovered why my my garden pond turned green last year maybe. The green was a bloom of euglenoids dominated by trachelomonads with other euglenoids. I have not use any chemicals over for 30 years but this last spring I looked at spent ...

Re: Cirri of a hypotrich protozoan

Hello Bruce You have unintentionally raised a very important change that is occuring in all areas of ecology For more than 100 years classification has been determined by morphology. In recent time molecular classication has brought turmoil to this area of study. Below I include some text from a rec...

Re: Blepharisma 120fps showing cilia

Hello Louise You have read my mind. I have recently obtained methylcellulose which is ready and waiting. I do not want to use anything else that will compromise the protozoa. I have an old Leitz Smith DIC with x25 x40 and x100 DIC objectives. The highest power is too dark at 120fps. So I am finding ...

Re: Blepharisma 120fps showing cilia

Hello Jochen I chose blue because I liked it. There is a technical answer I can give if you are interested? The camera is a Panasonic GH5 which is a mirrorless 4/3. I have used Pentax cameras for many years but I was surprised at how fast protozoa move in water. They moved so fast that I was unable ...

Re: Blepharisma 120fps showing cilia

Thank you for the feedback, I appreciate the time given to this.

I did take a massive gamble by buying an Orthoplan with Smith DIC from Ebay.
Thankfully it all worked out. I am still getting to grips with it all though.
