Basically Sanderson prisms without the external stress frame, pretty much any method works as long the correct stress gradient is created in the polymer.

Spatial filtering would make it clear - pinhole in foil will give good clean spherical wavefront (needle used on aluminium foil resting on ceramic tile gives quite good small pinholes). Interesting, seems to be really nice on paper.
