Yup, a rotifer. It's Taphrocampa, I believe...kind of an animated concertina. :D The last thing is Synura.
Still searching for the elusive tardigrade then. Thanks gentlemen

Mysteries from the duckpond

I ventured out to get some totally new samples today, I found a really good bunch of things in my first drop from a local duckpond.

guesses
1) Euglenoid
2)tardigrade
3)some kind of ciliate
4) I honestly have no clue, looks like an anenome

Re: Ciliate identification

The word "heterotrich" refers to the two types of ciliary structures on these guys (not their uneven distribution). They have composite cilia (polykinetids) arranged in the form of "adoral membranelles", partially encircling the oral region; and they also have simple somatic cilia, uniformly distri...

Re: Ciliate identification

Blepharisma is a heterotrich, based on the meaning of the words I'm guessing that means uneven distribution of cilia. What then does hypotrich mean?

Hypotrich conjugation? Binary Fission?

Hi Guys, I found these two hypotrich attached, unfortunately I didnt see anything before, and I couldnt see what would have happened as my slide dried out. They eventually separate, and then looking at one of them it appears it has two macronuclei ? Any idea what's going on here? http://office.shivs...

Re: Partial blue filter = 3d image?

Shivs, what you're describing is called "oblique Illumination." Since your microscope contains a filter holder, you can create oblique filters fairly easily to consistently reproduce this effect at varying magnifications. Here's some more information on how oblique illumination works: https://www.m...

Soil Sample.. No clue what this is

Just took some soil and placed in a petri dish, added some water. I tilted the dish and sucked off some of the somewhat clear liquid and put it on a slide. This object is roughly 250um length and doesn't appear to move of its own accord , other than that I have no idea.

I think you might get more feedback if you provided some details.

Knowing what microscope, objectives, slide preparation and illumination technique you used would help.
ok, thanks for the feedback. I just got a new camera so Ill take some more pics and make sure to note everything down.

Re: Partial blue filter = 3d image?

just a correction on this, it appears the ring around the filter holder is partially obscuring the light path. Still not sure what this is caused by.

Partial blue filter = 3d image?

I accidentally noticed today that putting my blue filter partially on adds a depth to the image, is this a known technique? What causes this phenomenon?

Some help with photography

Now that I have a half decent scope, I am trying to get some decent images. I am still trying to learn how to light specimens and getting the right balance of resolution and contrast. Please have a look and let me know what you think.

Camera software implementation of color temperature seems a bit suspect?
No clue, I'm using the omax software, I have a new amscope cam on the way but I think it uses the exact same software.

Re: Brand new T490B - extremely yellow?

3350K is still noticeably yellow to the eye but hopefully you see an improvement. What white balance setting were you using when you got the really yellow-looking photo? Does the camera software have a white balance mode where you manually set the color temperature? heres a comparison with default ...

Re: How to explain it?

Great topic. For me the big mystery is how tiny unicellular beings without eyes, ears, or brains can behave so much like intelligent animals. Somehow they manage to find food, evade predators (sometimes), extricate themselves from tight spots (eventually), reproduce, and sometimes even seem to have...

Brand new T490B - extremely yellow?

Hi Guys, new scope arrived, such an upgrade to my crappy omax. I am a bit concerned with how yellow it appears. I have tried using the blue filter and it appears closer to normal but still not quite right. I knew halogen bulbs were supposed to be yellow but this is quite pronounced 0002.jpg 0001.jpg

Well that's the first time I've actually helped anyone :) I just started microscopy about a month ago so I'm glad I can contribute.
