Swamp-in-a-jar / One year update

Hello everybody, I am happy to report that one year on the Swamp III is alive and well, with lots of activity and many creatures swimming around, going about their protozoan business, blissfully unaware that they live in a jar on my desk. For the record, the Swamp III is a collection of pebbles, wat...

Re: Seed Shrimp

This is fantastic. Great detail on the vorticella and very nice colours. Are the colours obtained with polarisation linked to some property of your sample, like density? can you extract any information from that? So your subject has to be *between* the two polarised sheets. I wonder if photographic ...

Swamp-in-a-jar: a closed ecosystem (part II - the Inventory)

Day two - the Inventory There was an abundance of micro- and not-so-micro organisms in the jar. The stars were these beetle-like bugs (about 5mm) that crawled on the surface of the water, but immersed and upside down. Maybe one of you kind people can identify them. They form a bubble of air around t...

Thanks! It's a cool little thing to have: makes my girlfriend avoid my work-bench and visitors want to buy microscopes :).

Re: Swamp-in-a-jar: a closed ecosystem (part I - the setup)

That is an *awesome* book. Thank you!

Good idea to keep your samples in the same jar and keep adding. Might try this. The rotifers and paramecium took over my jar. Large nematodes as well. The rotifers really are thriving. i wonder how many generations spawned in 6 months?

Re: Swamp-in-a-jar: a closed ecosystem (part I - the setup)

Hey there, Nice setup you have there! Those plants look nice and healthy. And that's a good trick with the paper towel and the gravel - thanks. What sort of living things do you have in your containers? Do you see variation over time? I find the Vorticella disappears first, sadly, as it's one of my ...

Swamp-in-a-jar: a closed ecosystem (part I - the setup)

This is an attempt (well, the third, to be more precise) to create a closed, self-sustaining ecosystem in a jar. It is now in its 6th month and I am happy to report that it's alive and well. It has proven to be a very convenient source of samples throughout the winter months, which, at the mid-North...
