ID questions

First, what are these things? I found them both in the water from a fish tank and I think the photos were taken at 100x for both hair algae ones (with the blob with the saw "mouth") and the zoomed out "bug" (tardigrade?), and 400x for the zoomed in one. Second, where do I look for ID info outside of...

Re: Nikon model s objective recommendations

To add to PeteM's advice, I would also suggest carefully inspecting the inside and outside of that 40x objective and see if there is optical defect / damage / severe internal dust / mold / oil. You can use other brands / series of 160mm tube objectives that are corrected for 0.17mm cover slips. But...

Re: Nikon model s objective recommendations

You might post a picture of your 40x objective, just to be sure it's the right type? Does your scope have a 4 hole nosepiece for objectives? If so, an ideal arrangement might include 4x, 10x, 20x, and 40x -- with a 100x oil immersion lens fit in as needed. I'd be inclined to get a proper Nikon 40x ...

Nikon model s objective recommendations

I recently finished restoring my model S and just got the PFM I needed for photomicrography. Last night i was figuring it all out, and when I looked at it, the 4x and 10x worked fine and were parfocal, but the 40x was nowhere near where it needed to be. I never even could see anything in it other th...

Re: Nikon model S trinocular for photography?

Do you already have a full frame DSLR? The Nikon short barrel objectives for this scope, while possibly excellent (plan, plan apo etc.), require eyepiece corrections to deliver the best quality image. The most critical part of those 35mm film era adapters will be a properly corrected photo relay le...

Re: Nikon model S trinocular for photography?

So the PFM mount would probably be an F-mount then?

I was about to get a polaroid thing, so I'm glad I saw this! (especially at $1 per shot!)

I DID get the PFM, though, so the thing now is to find what mount it is. It won't get here for a few more days though.

Re: Photo tube (?) for Nikon Model S

I ended up getting a Nikon Microflex PFM. I'm not sure what parts I need. Is there anyone who has info on parts I need? I think I have everything other than the remote shutter, but I would like info on that and the camera mount that I would need. Thanks.

Nikon model S trinocular for photography?

I just finished restoring my Nikon S and am taking a film photography class where I want to use it for extreme macro photography. My professor said my options would be to either get the microflex PMF, EMF, or AMF (possibly fmf?) adapters, or get a macro lens and jerry rig it. My initial idea was tha...

Photo tube (?) for Nikon Model S

I just finished restoring my Nikon Model S! A summer and a winter break spent on it and it looks great (still a little dust, but I'll sort that out if it becomes an issue). My question is what I need to get to put a Sony a7 mk3 on the photo tube of the trinocular head (correct me on the terms. Is th...

I'll try working on it today, but in the mean time, what would I need to get a camera onto the photo tube?
Just the inside diameter of the photo tube?

Re: Very dirty Nikon microscope, what to do?

It's done! Great image quality too!

One issue is that I'm getting two images. One is above and a little to one side of the other. Any idea what happened to cause this? I'm hoping I don't have to go in and re-align everything. Could this just be me at an odd angle or something?

Re: Very dirty Nikon microscope, what to do?

My turret is fine (maybe the SLIGHTEST bit not smooth), but absolutely the SMOOTHEST of any of the parts on it. I was about to use red 'n tacky on it, but I won't now lol. What modern synthetic do you recommend, and what should I use to remove the old stuff? It's more like the consistency of oil at ...

Re: Very dirty Nikon microscope, what to do?

I ended up with the Nyegel 767a grease.

Will that work for all the parts, or just the inter-pupillary distance adjustment slides? Specifically, will it work on the plastic gears?

Out of curiosity, is there anywhere I could get really metal gears to replace the old plastic ones?

Nyogel 767A grease is worth looking into.
It's pricy in the UK which is why I haven't tried it.
Lol. I might look into it but it sounds like something I'll have the same excuse for!

Do I need synthetic grease, or does it really matter?

Re: Very dirty Nikon microscope, what to do?

I've not found Nikon Labophot 2 screws to be cheese at all,1980's onward is recent to me. Stuck tight beyond belief sometimes though. Re: Very dirty Nikon microscope, what to do?

A few thoughts: - There are still some microscope repair people in the Bay Area, but a complete refurbishment is likely to cost substantially more than the value of the scope. Even the hundreds of oil and tire change places in the Bay Area are getting $100+ per hour of labor -- and finding even sem...

Re: Very dirty Nikon microscope, what to do?

I started to clean the scope and found that there were several screws that were rusted, old grease, and then I got scared I would mess up the optical alignment. So my questions are: 1. Are the screws normal sizes or something rare or custom? 2. Is there any alignment or something I need to worry abo...

Re: Very dirty Nikon microscope, what to do?

Sanderguy777 I forgot mention check the toggle on the back of the trinocular head is properly set at one of the three settings (30% visual 70% photo/100% visual/100% photo) as a prism could be stuck in a half position giving you the incomplete visual via the eyepieces. See photo below I don't know ...

Sanderguy777, You want to measure the OUTSIDE diameter of the tube that sticks straight up. That is where the adapter is placed (also if needed extension tube, etc,). Also it is where the adapter/camera equipment has the least stress on the microscope. Have a great semester at college! V Thanks! I'...

Re: Very dirty Nikon microscope, what to do?

If I work on it, I'll spend another $50 on cleaning stuff like lens paper and 70% ethanol, and specially designed swabs and whatnot, and gain the experience and better understanding, and I'd I ruin it, I still have all the accessories like the condenser, stage, etc, for a LOT less money. A jug of d...
