Re: Can I use a multi-word search argument?

Unfortunately, the site's search engine wants to ignore many search terms--needs to be fixed. But, everything on the site does seem to be indexed by Google, so using Google with the site's URL included (you don't even need to use formal syntax) works quite well.

Re: is indian microscope any good?

There have been a few prior postings about Indian microscopes on this forum, which you may be able to find. My impression (no actual experience buying) is they are often comparable to similar Chinese models. I have heard some Indian stuff is surprisingly good, but I suppose there is a lot of variance.

Re: camera and/or camera adapter question

Amscope sells camera-specific 2x DSLR adapters on Ebay, Amazon and its website. E.g. https://www.ebay.com/itm/190814167210 (Nikon for $130).

Amscope also has a variety of USB cameras, if you prefer that over a DSLR. You would probably want >5MB and USB 3.0.

Re: Gathering parts for phase contrast

Here is a set of four nikon plan phase objectives with a nosepiece: https://www.ebay.com/itm/194692653368 Thr above labophot has a phase condenser but doesn't look to have phase objectives. It looks kind of rough but you can often get mislabeled phase scopes for surprisingly good prices. Assuming i...

Re: Hole in my microscope...

If it were me, I'd aim for a 20x objective--a very useful power for water critters. 10x eyepieces are the standard for most systems. Resolution is largely determined by the numerical aperture of the objective, and increasing the magnification of the eyepiece is likely to result in little more than e...

Re: Camera suggestion

Do some googling or searches on this forum to find others who are using the microscopes/cameras at issue. Easiest to interface is probably a USB camera, but better results are usually obtained with a larger-sensor DSLR or similar. If the camera has a mechanical shutter (most non-USB cameras), you wa...

Re: Full electronic shutter vs. normal shutter

Finding a camera with EFCS - it can be hard to tell even from the camera documentation if full electronic shutter or EFCS is available for shooting without a lens i.e. direct projection. My Canon M200 has an electronic shutter, but it only functions in 'Quiet' mode, which prevents shutter release w...

Re: Full electronic shutter vs. normal shutter

OK the mirror slap at the beginning of DSLR cameras is the major cause of shutter shock. Many cameras (with mirrors) offer EFCS which raises the mirrors already before taking any photo. But, at the end there is still a mechnical shutter to end the exposure. If we compare EFCS cameras (still having ...

Not sure how much of a problem it is in microphotography, but electronic shutters can give a "rolling shutter" effect that is not good with moving subjects: https://www.jmpeltier.com/disadvantages-silent-electronic-shutter/ I am not familiar with the A5000, but if it has “Electronic First Shutter Cu...

Yeah, I was also disappointed when I realized that tardigrades are not nearly as durable as portrayed. The media confuses their active water phase with the hibernation state (when they can be quite durable).

Welcome! It's hard to find microscopes in shops anywhere these days; but fortunately there are online options. Don't worry too much about the advertised magnification. 1000x is pretty much the maximum useful magnification that can be achieved with a light microscope, typically by using a 100x oil ob...

Scary, for sure. Contrary to what the article says, however, this brain eating amoeba--naegleria fowleri--is not rare at all; it is quite common--found just about everywhere in lakes, rivers, soil... Oliver has a video in which he shows the difference between oil and no-oil and concludes that no-oil is better. But a prime consideration for him appears to be the danger of getting oil on and perhaps inside a non-oil objective, which I suppose in a school environment is a real concern. For a carefu...
