Re: Red spotted worm

A more common name is bristle worm. They are sometimes seen in wastewater treatment plants.

Alyssum Stem (Higher Magnification)

My previous focus stacked image of the stem of an Alyssum flower was taken with a 4x objective. Here is a photo stacked image I made using a 10x objective. It was put together in Helicon Focus from 28 full frame raw files. The final image is highly magnified compared to what I see in the microscope ...

Re: Focus Stacked Alyssum Flower Stem

Based on new work I have done, I believe that the blue colour seen on the fiber in the image is an artifact arising by the way I am lighting the subject.

Re: Focus Stacked Alyssum Flower Stem

When you blow the image up, the blue fiber appears to have a complex structure and the blue colour isn’t uniform. It would be too difficult to try to try to examine it further under higher mag. given its low abundance.

Re: Spencer Buffalo Stereo Microscope

Thanks for the additional info. This microscope was built like a tank and judging how I found it, was up to the challenge. It was used in a fish packing plant in their microbiology test lab for many years, well before when I acquired it. A lot of the construction appears to be brass which unfortunat...

Focus Stacked Alyssum Flower Stem

I am presently in my first week of evaluating the focus stacking program Helicon Focus and am quite amazed by how excellent it is. I made this image of a dried out Alyssum flower stem by focus stacking 67 raw images together in Helicon Focus. This went surprisingly quick, given that each raw image w...

Re: Spiraling Organisms?

Very hard to tell at this magnification and resolution. You can rule out spirochaetes. You need a really good high resolution 1000x phase contrast microscope to see these. Spirillum are much easier to see as they are much larger. You really need more magnification to see their beautiful corkscrew mo...

Re: 1940s(?) Spencer model identification help

The serial number of your microscope is consistent with it being made in the 1940’s. Here is a very useful resource for dating a number of microscopes incl. Spencer based on their serial numbers.

Spencer Buffalo Stereo Microscope

I this is the youngest vintage microscope in my collection, a circa 1932 Spencer Buffalo Stereo Microscope, possibly model 55. Still researching it. It was used for many years in a food plant microbiology quality control lab. After giving it a major cleaning, I was delighted to find it was in reason...

Alyssum Flower Stigma Focus Stacked

Been playing around with focus stacking photomicroscopy and evaluating a focus stacking program called Helicon Focus. I believe that the small yellow structure shown here is the Stigma end of the Pistal. My image was created using a Nikon light microscope. Several images focused at different planes ...

Re: Nikon Labophot-2

I don’t recall the details of the head. I had the microscope built by Nikon Instruments around 1995 for a previous employer. I bought it from them years later in almost new condition (I was the only user :D )

Re: Nikon Labophot-2

As a bacteriologist, I have always used many research quality phase contrast. The Nikon Eclipse came after the Labophot-2. I bought one for my bacteriological work which I used for 15 years. A great research tool. It was similarly equipped to my Labophot. I have also used Olympus, Wild/Leitz and Zei...

Hello from Ontario

Hi My name is Jared. I am a retired Ph.D. Microbiologist who specializes in wastewater treatment and consults in this field. I have a Nikon Labophot phase contrast microscope and three vintage microscopes from the early 1900’s. I enjoy photography and post some of my work incl. photomicrographs to F...
