You can surely try an iris, cut a piece of cardboard with an hole like 2mm diameter, and stick it in front of the lens, see if improves. Also, don't take photos at the max magnification, zoom out a bit, like double distance, should get cleaner, more depth of focus (maybe with same amount of detail)...

Thanks for the advice! However since the yarns is twisted it would be better if it is not flattened for my purpose. For the lens mine doesn't have iris, does getting a iris diaphragm and attaching it to the objective help?
