Re: Zeiss Objective Disassembly

Well I have tried numerous methods so far, including with the addition of penetrating oil down in the groove, and this thing just absolutely will not budge. I think I'd need an F1 wheel gun to have a hope. Maybe someone disassembled it before me and covered the threads in loctite. I guess if I ever ...

Re: Zeiss Objective Disassembly

The colored ring unscrews from the front. I used two small band clamps (with rubber) but leather should work too. That blue paint layer is really thin so make sure you have a good grip before breaking it free. I am not sure what the next step for clearing out the sticky grease would be. Ah excellen...

Zeiss Objective Disassembly

Hello all, I recently picked up this Zeiss objective on eBay. In classic eBay lens fashion, this one arrived looking like someone had dumped a bucket of lube into it. I had to do a lot of cleaning to get it into good shape and then I found that it was not parfocal with my other lenses - the spring r...

Re: Better circular compass cutter

One of my discord members got something like this: https://www.amazon.com/Plastic-Mathematics-Drawing-Drafting-Template/dp/B00VWSS5LU and then scratched the outline of the circles in with a pin and cut them out with scissors. I bet a swiveling craft knife would also do the trick. I got one of those ...

Re: European source for beginner scopes?

Another option is to buy directly from one of the many distributors or factories in China. Yeah I think that's a good option if you're seasoned but a lot of folks that are asking are young and/or inexperienced so they might not be super comfortable with that process. Anyone in the EU wanna start a ...

Re: Your stacking experiences with HeliconFocus and Zerene Stacker software

As I understand it, the general workflow you should follow in Zerene is to generate Dmap and Pmax, use Dmap as your primary image and then retouch blurry spots with the Pmax stack.

European source for beginner scopes?

So I don’t live in Europe, but I get a lot of folks from Europe asking me what they should buy. Most people are looking to spend under 300 ($ or € or £) and most people are beginners so I’m hesitant to direct them to the used market. In the US, I always have a good answer. The BoliScope as I’ve come...

Re: some stereos

But that was too much work for me, so I gave up and worked directly on the stereo images. I do this asynchronously because they are rotated by an angle. You could also work on them in two windows open at the same time, but that didn't work for me. Red/Cyan images I create with Picolay. Okay that so...

Re: some stereos

I just started using Zerene yesterday.

So for these stacks, are you retouching each of the stereo pair images individually? Or is there a secret to generate a flat, retouched image first and then convert to stereo?

Also, how do you get the red/cyan images?

Nikon 4x Plan Apo stack of a skeeter! I used the lens to direct project onto a Sony A7III sensor and took 48 images manually adjusting my helicoid slightly between each. Re: extension rings or microscope lens adapting it to a Canon camera

I’ve done a little work with a Nikon 4x Plan Apo and a 10x CFN Plan adapted to my full frame camera. They are capable of very sharp imagery but of course the focal depth is razor thin. This can be adjusted by putting your own aperture on the back of the lens with the usual light and sharpness penalt...

Re: 1.67x Testing - Spitta Diatom Slide

The diatom second from the left shows the effect most. It might be some sort of psychophysical effect arising from the adjacent, saturated colors. In any event, it's not a big deal. Clearly not a flaw in your overall system because your video imagery is great. Cheers, David It’s funny you mention t...

Re: Dino-lite handheld scopes?

Good form factor but if that isn't essential an industrial zoom lens like an optem or navitar zoom 6000 can often be had cheap and paired with a c mount camera and they have reasonably good optics. That’s a good call - I’ve been meaning to set up something like this to capture full, high-res images...

Dino-lite handheld scopes?

So I watch eBay a lot and one thing I've always noticed is that these Dino-lite USB microscopes go for crazy amounts of money! Meanwhile, similar looking Alibaba-esque scopes can be had for well under 50 USD. Are Dino-lites just incredible optical devices or is something weird going on with the mark...

Re: 1.67x Testing - Spitta Diatom Slide

Great find with the NFK 1.67 - not common, expensive, and, based on your successes, definitely valuable. I'm with Phill, however: something doesn't look quite right with your diatom images. I also thought it was motion blur at first, but your HiRes images don't support that. Maybe something about t...
