Re: seeking advice
Used is usually a fraction of new. Also the longer you are willing to hunt the better the chances you'll find the best bargain; if you have to pass on the first few that's fine, others will show up. Your best approach is to learn about then before you commit; there are nuances that may end up buggin...

Re: Beginner's Video - Achromat vs Plan vs PlanApo
Worth mentioning is that there is such a thing as the Superachromat! 4 colors in perfect alignment. Zeiss did a few of those for photography but I don't think anybody is making them anymore. There is also the possibility of creating what I guess would be a superb-superacrhomat and let's call the nex...

Re: 3D Mechanical Stage
To expand on my "If you plan on making digital images": The brain has a funny way to subjectively focus on what we are looking at. This is why when you take a picture of what you think is the perfect moment you then look at it and then realize all the stuff that was around. Your brain was literally ...

Re: 3D Mechanical Stage
I'm going to go out on a limb and say that it is marketing fluff, as in you can move stuff around left, right, and in an angle. I say this because even the cheapest of microscopes offer a 3D stage so it can't be that impressive feat of technology. I'm also saying it because if I'm wrong it will expe...

Attaching camera to microscope
As I wait for my new-to-me oldie (hard to argue with free) I'm trying to sort out what I need in order to attach my camera to it. For starters this is the same model of what I'm getting: https://www.ebay.com/itm/252960722676?hash=item3ae5a24ef4%3Ag%3AvVEAAOSwWxNYrHrt&LH_BIN=1 An eventual upgrade to ...

Is there a use for a 25x eyepiece?
I mean other than manufacturers throwing them in there to claim bigger numbers? Does anybody actually uses them?

Re: Springtails and other soil mesofauna - Microscope reccomendations
One of the best lenses ever created was the Vivitar Series 1 90 mm f/2.5 VMC Macro. The sharpness and flatness of field is amazing. It can do 2:1 by itself and 1:1 with the included extension. If you get one do make sure it comes with the original extension tube; unlike a plain tubes it has optics t...

Re: Springtails and other soil mesofauna - Microscope reccomendations
Well here is the blind leading the blind... I'm sure I'll be corrected if I misspeak. Magnification is the easiest thing to fake so most vendors love to tout x2000+ which means nothing. Think of magnification as the ability to zoom into a small web image: you can see it bigger but it just gets blurr...

Re: Buying an old Zeiss standard microscope
As luck with have it I asked on my extended group of friends, which includes a micro biologist, and somebody volunteered a microscope I could have for the shipping. Is the same model as the one here: https://www.ebay.com/itm/252960722676?hash=item3ae5a24ef4%3Ag%3AvVEAAOSwWxNYrHrt&LH_BIN=1 Hard to a...

Re: Buying an old Zeiss standard microscope
I thought I responded but the post went poof... The comparison between the Zeiss and the B120 was on purpose, meant to compare functionalities. What am I giving up by using something like the old Zeiss vs. a modern one with modern optics and controls? I'm used to the idiosyncrasies of vintage lenses...

Buying an old Zeiss standard microscope
Hello everybody! My interest in microscopes come from my interest in mycology; looking at spores and other features to aid in learning about and identifying mushrooms. I'm just getting seriously started with mushrooms and currently I know even less about microscopes. My other interest has always bee...
