Separate Board For "Big Four"?

Could we possibly have a separate message board for the big four? It seems like there's a lot of talk about Nikon heads, Olympus objectives, Zeiss illumination and Leica whatever. Could we possibly keep all this in one place? Just means that those of us who have instruments that actually work can di...

Re: This is probably a silly question

I take a simpler, pragmatic view. It either works or it doesn't. It's either satisfying and rewarding to the viewer, or it's not. And unless you have a PhD in optical physics, you and we won't understand why. Does that matter? Of course not, because it either works or it doesn't. Just enjoy your mic...

Bath Plughole

Inspired by a recent post by Don Schaeffer, I used an old bass guitar string on which I had bent the machine head end into a narrow hook which I used to unblock my bath plughole. Mrs FBP has long hair, so this is a fairly regular activity. I collected a little of the resulting rotting gunk and this ...

Re: What to with Specimens after observing.

I have always returned the sample to the environment from which it came, or if that's impractical, to an environment in which any life in the sample has a chance of survival.

Then I clean and reuse the slide & coverslip.

Beautiful photo. What is it?
It shows fern spores in their sporangium under the leaf.
Ah-ha! I got videos of these things firing pollen and wondered what they were! I may have called them "fern springy things".

Re: The Sport of Microscopy

While I was never chasing moving targets with my telescope, I examine a slide in exactly the same way that I used to scan an area of interest in the sky. I note the coordinates of an interesting object (unless it's cyclops, because they're clearly on meth!), and revisit it. I can easily spend an hou...

I have circled the "somethings" in one of the images. Does anyone have any ideas? Reverse image search returns nothing.

Apologies for the blurry images - just quick frame grabs.

Thank you for the information apochronaut. I'm slowly learning about micro-organisms, but as you can likely tell, my knowledge of flora is rather limited!

Re: Nikon SMZ (2?) Collimation problems.

This may seem unrelated, but I have successfully collimated a number of Newtownian telescopes, from 6" to 24". In all cases, the plate or clamp(s) holding the primary mirror had pairs of screws for adjustment. I suggest that in your first picture the screw pairs 2/3, 5/6, 7/8 are the equivalent of t...

Fern Firing Pollen

I have two common ferns in the garden, Athyrium filix-femina , and on the underside of every leaf there are hundreds (thousands?) of tiny circular lumps. Each lump contains a mass of pods, each held in a curved spring-like structure. Inside each little pod is the pollen. Now, I don't know whether it...
