new unknown ciliate to us, any guesses?

This creature was in a freshwater sample. I've included two views, one at 200x and one at 400x My husband is eager to figure this one out.

Interesting cilia or cirri on one end!

Re: unknown flagellate

Thanks so much, Bruce! I really appreciate that you shared this - gives me some ideas of the thinking process for identifying and understanding these amazing creatures. It is hard to know where to start sometimes. The basics are getting easier - cilia, no cilia, flagellum, no flagellum but I know th...

Re: unknown flagellate

Bruce - could you tell me more about the flagellate? I looked it up online and now assume that it doesn't have a lorica, just a spiral body. Is that right? Are there any sources online or in print that would help with ID and info about organisms , like flagellates? I like to know more about them, cu...

unknown flagellate

Hi all

Found this one in a fresh water pond. Any guesses? Definitely has a flagellum and what appears to be a spiral lorica. Viewed at 200x

Thanks so much, Bruce! I was hoping that you would look at it. It was quite a puzzle for us. Characteristics of an amoeba, with spicules. Amazing what you will find.

Re: Will buying a 60x objective improve resolution?

Big thanks to all of you for the advice. It is so nice to have experienced folks to turn to.

Lots of ideas to try here - my husband Rich is the slide preparer and has asked for more info about preparing slides, so really appreciate that info.

Darkfield info is very useful too.

Thanks again! Tina

Re: Will buying a 60x objective improve resolution?

Thank you, Pete and Louise! Good info. I didn't know about the depth of field issue, which is some of our problem at 40x. We are looking at pond critters with well slides. The Euromex bscope does have 160mm objectives, not infinity. We have tried to make darkfield work using homemade filters but can'...

another interesting microbe to id

We watched this one for some time. It seemed to have a protective layer/membrane/? that kept the bacteria on the outer edges. The bacteria concentrated on the edges for a bit, then gradually left. The microbe had some sort of pseudopodia radiating out of the spherical center.

Monitor suggestions

Hello, Just bought a Euromex HDMI camera for my b-scope. I want to attach a small monitor to the camera for shared viewing on the kitchen table and could use your advice. I was told to get a 1080p HDMI monitor - that's all. Anything else I should consider? We need it to be small - around 12 - 15 inc...

Re: DSLR camera or special-purpose microscope cameras?

Thanks all!

I didn't realize that the laptop HDMI was for output!!!

So, you all I think I'm on the right track to buy a DSLR camera instead of the special purpose camera?

Thanks for the camera recommendation - so many out there in the used market.

Camera buying advice

My husband and I are beginners and enjoying looking at pond water microbes. We have a Euromex bscope with e-plan objectives and would like to get a camera for live viewing in the $400 - 600 range. Perhaps a bit more if it would make a difference. Euromex sells there own cameras but don't know if tha...
