Re: PlanF objectives
Excellent detail as usual! Just curious what instrumentation do you use in your evaluations. I have always been curious, especially in color renditions, as to how comparisons are made. I know in photography we have master color charts, e.g. Tiffen Color Separation Guide and Grey Scale. Are there sim...

Re: WTB AO Spencer 60x Dry Objective Cat#122
With the exception of only a few early infinity corrected apochromats that I know of ( 10X .30, 43X .80 and 80X 1.30) the infinity corrected objectives have the catalogue # engraved on the objective barrel. They are rarely 3 numbers and normally 4 numbers. There were rarely serial #'s on the infini...

Re: WTB AO Spencer 60x Dry Objective Cat#122
AO objectives labelled as C (C=coated) are for 160mm TL systems. Have you considered adding a pair of 15x eyepieces? Your 40x then gets you to 60x. Edit: There's a 63x 34mm inifinity in this post https://www.microbehunter.com/microscopy-forum/viewtopic.php?f=16&t=15484 Thanks for the link, but too ...

Re: WTB AO Spencer 60x Dry Objective Cat#122
I'm trying to stay away from oil, and the 34mm parfocal infinity objectives are hard to come by, it seems, except for the standard 4x, 10x, 43x/45x, 97x/100x oil. I came across a 20x AO Spencer C80874 but don't know whether it is Infinity corrected. I've tried to search, but no cigar. I appreciate y...

Objectives, Probably a dumb Question.
It seems that there are two "standard" industrial parfocal lengths used, 45mm and 60mm. AO Spencer used 34mm. Can spacers be used to adapt a shorter parfocal length objective to a turret with longer parfocal length objectives? For example, 11mm spacer with 34mm parfocal objective to obtain 45mm leng...

Re: Looking for a NICE dust cover
If you want to display it, get some Lexan or Plexiglas and make a display case for it. You could also find an appropriately sized fish tank and set it upside-down over your 'scope on a wooden platform. Just some suggestions.

Re: Olympus CH-2 Issue - Stage Lifting
On the X-Y units on my 'scopes there is a small nylon pad on the bottom so that the actual mechanism does not actually rub on the table when in motion. Perhaps some accumulation of debris under the pad has lifted the mechanism enough for it to slip over the slide. Just a thought.

I'm not 100% sure as I bought mine used thru Ebay, but I think these are the people I bought mine from:
https://spwindustrial.com/swift-optical ... field-10x/
Price is way above what I paid for mine, but they have 5 for sale.

Re: Swift/Motic M2 Portable/Field microscope.
The copy of the manual that I have states that the condenser N.A. is 1.2, but the .65 N.A. sounds more realistic. Also, I read that the eyepieces were 10X though the manual does state them to be 12.5x. That would only change the Magni-Changer lens magnifications in any case. The two small knobs just...

Re: Swift SW200 Microscope
The popularity if Swift microscopes is based on several elements. James Swift and Son was a venerable innovative English microscope maker, which made a number of the most classic British microscopes. As the British industry faltered, the Swift trademark went to another company but ultimately ended ...

Re: Swift SW200 Microscope
I actually bought two AO Sixty microscopes "for parts or repair" thinking I could make one good 'scope from the two. When I received them, they were both in near perfect working condition and fairly nice cosmetically, as well. One had a three objective turret w/ 4x,10x, and 43x objectives, a 161 wid...

Swift SW200 Microscope
In my newcomer intro, I mentioned that I had purchased a Swift SW200 'scope mainly because of the good reviews it received and the review that stated it was "not a toy but a good entry level microscope." Well my assessment is that it is a good 'scope for grade school and maybe jr. high. It is a very...

Oil and the Condenser; another question
Just curious about the use of oil on the condenser. I have an AO Sixty Reference Manual, which goes through the details of how to use the 100x oil objective, and it does not include anything about putting oil on the condenser and specifically shows only adding oil to the cover slip. Everything I rea...

I have a couple of AO Sixty microscopes and found a Reference Manual for it that had each page in .jpg format. I printed each page and then scanned it, so I now have a copy in .pdf format, which makes it much easier to use when viewing on the computer. If anyone would like a copy of the .pdf manual,...

Welcome to the forum. I'm relatively new here, as well, and have found many knowledgeable people willing to share their knowledge. Re: Parfocalling-do it yourself?
I also shim at objective shoulder using o rings or rubber bands.Tension provided by screwing action and rubber bands is enough to hold objective at the exact shim height. No glue is needed. Excellent solution! All this works really well if you have to bring the objective closer to the specimen; wha...

Re: Parfocalling-do it yourself?
Not. There are some designs such as the Bausch & Lomb patented ....... The objective with closest focus is treated as the standard and the other objectives are shimmed to match. Interesting that they start with "the objective with closest focus," which makes sense, as that would seem to be the most...

Parfocalling-do it yourself?
I have seen many posts where it was suggested that replacing an objective will result in it possibly not being parfocalled. However, I have also read some articles on parfocalling, and it seems rather straight forward: 1) After removing the lower objective tube covers on the higher power objectives ...

Re: Why are these mechanical stages so #$@&%*! expensive?
The first two are expensive because they are "Nikon" and "Olympus." The third is less expensive because it is "used," and the last one is inexpensive because they cant figure out where the battery goes  By the way, I have used one of the inexpensive ones and they work acceptably well, even wit...

The different it makes is whether or not you want to work with chemicals to eliminate the parafine from the specimen, and whether or not you can get good results with a Carrot. So if I were you I would start with a carrot because that's easy, and go from there. Thank you Greg, I'll start with carro...

I had some time on my hands, so decided to make a microtome (I have a small machine shop.) Nothing fancy. Fabricated out of aluminum with a hardened steel top and steel “plunger" with a 3/8-32 thread for a 0.03125 per revolution advance. I had an old Weck straight razor that uses the longer, single-...

500 WVDC is good to know, but you need to know the capacitance in uf (microfarads). Most items, if not specialized for a particular application can be purchased form, Allied Electronics, Newark Electronics, Digi-key, etc. The value in uf is important and can be gotten from a schematic, or from someo...

Re: Condenser Confusion
Motic still sells the M3 version of this, but they modified it with three micro objectives (if I recall, 4x, 10x, 40x) and a 1x macro. Not nearly as "nifty" IMO as the M2 with the "Magnachanger."
