Re: Sand Grains

Wow, your photos are looking great! You are doing an excellent job using your light/shadow to capture textures, similar to what you will be seeing in micrometeorites. If you ever need any help with micrometeorite stuff (finding/photographing/identifying) just reach out! I love this stuff and it’s aw...

Re: Recommendations for 40x-100x Objective, LWD, High n.a.?

I pulled an ∞/1.2mm 40x .60 PL L from inverted, cleaned it and put in ∞ iscope to test. It's not a happy bunny in there. Just about the worst resolution of anything I've tried including oil objective dry. I can't say I know what I'm doing with the combination though, tried turning the slide upside ...

Re: Recommendations for 40x-100x Objective, LWD, High n.a.?

Have you thought about shinning light sideways around the horizontal perimeter of those glassy spherical micro meteorites, through 3D printed diffusion balls of different sizes placed on stage, instead of diffusion light from above? This may tame most of the “hot” reflections. The light is already ...

Re: Recommendations for 40x-100x Objective, LWD, High n.a.?

heyitsmedusty, I am interested in learning more about your lighting techniques. You have posted two micro meteorite photos. You indicated that the second photo was taken with vertical illuminator, which you do not prefer for photography. The first photo seems to he produced by your DIY LED ring lig...

Re: Recommendations for 40x-100x Objective, LWD, High n.a.?

It is recommended that you use DIY LED lighting for vertical lighting systems, which is not expensive. The lighting I use in my vertical illumination system is actually DIY. It's a high-powered COB LED that greatly outperforms the original halogen light box, which produces a VERY warm temperature l...

Re: Recommendations for 40x-100x Objective, LWD, High n.a.?

I'm curious. Since you have a complete BH vertical lighting configuration, why not buy the LWD NEOSPlan 100X? I think it has a good cost performance ratio. What's the problem code? Yeah I probably shouldn't have made the upper limit so high. At that magnification, you can't image the whole subject ...

Re: Recommendations for 40x-100x Objective, LWD, High n.a.?

Hi There are dark field epi-iluminators from different brandes. I think that that´s the way for your subjects. Whith that equipment you needn´t long working distance objectives, because the ilumination come from the outer barrel of the same objective. You can work with polarized ligth, and apply a ...

Re: Recommendations for 40x-100x Objective, LWD, High n.a.?

I'd be interested to know what would be a good substitute for a micrometeorite to test out some options. I have no experience with the subject. I'd likely go for best lower n/a as image stacking is something I still haven't got to. You could use any single grain of sand as a good substitute, as tha...

Re: Recommendations for 40x-100x Objective, LWD, High n.a.?

That's a really interesting and important project. I'm curious though, how you adjust your optical system to accept either finite or infinity corrected objectives? I've thought about this some and it is theoretically possible. Here is my current setup: Stand: Olympus BH Head: Olympus BH trinocular ...

Recommendations for 40x-100x Objective, LWD, High n.a.?

I'm looking for objectives that meet the following criteria: 1. Magnification anywhere from 40x - 100x 2. As long of a working distance as possible 3. As high of n.a. as possible 4. Either infinity corrected or finite are fine (I can adjust my setup for either) 5. Good for reflected light 6. No cove...

Re: Imaging Whole Geological Subjects - What Micro Setup?

Also as a note, I don't use the vertical illuminator for my lighting. I crafted a very small ring light + diffuser that mounts to the objective for even lighting around the subject. You can see the rings of light reflected in the image above, like the objective looking into a dark mirror.

Re: Superwide Trinocular Heads = Superwide Photos?

But aren't the eyepiece ports the same size on superwide heads as standard heads, both 23mm? The expanded field of view just projects as a larger circle from the same opening.

Superwide Trinocular Heads = Superwide Photos?

This might be a really easy one. I use a CH-2 stand with a standard BH-2 trinocular head. For photography, I use a 3.3x NFK photo eyepiece in the trinocular port. This fills the entire frame of my full frame 6D sensor. If I were to get a superwide BH-2 trinocular head, does the image in the trinocul...

Re: Imaging Whole Geological Subjects - What Micro Setup?

Thanks for everyone's help so far! Just to close the loop for now, I ended up putting a BH2-MA vertical illuminator (only brightfield capabilities) on the CH-2 stand, and purchased some MSPlan objectives to complement. I installed an LED light source to replace the halogen lamp. And I'm getting some...

Re: Imaging Whole Geological Subjects - What Micro Setup?

So if I added this f=180 illuminator box under my current CH2 binocular head, would I be able to use the "M" objectives (or any objective with "f=180")?

Pete, this is all incredibly helpful. I'm located in Kentucky, so most of my searching is on eBay. I'm up for putting together a bargain system based on the appropriate parts. @peteM, great advice, thank you! I'm now looking into Olympus BHM microscopes. Are there other models you would recommend? Imaging Whole Geological Subjects - What Micro Setup?

TLDR; what would you propose as a decent setup to outfit my Olympus CH-2 (realistic, let's say <$1000) to get high quality photos of solid subjects 0.2mm-0.4mm? Reflected light, lots of surface texture. Looking for suggestions on objectives that will work with the CH-2 stand, suggestions on lighting...

Thank you for the replies, very helpful so far. They never become disengaged, but there is just enough...

Olympus CH-2 Issue - Stage Lifting

I use an Olympus CH-2 microscope, mainly for reflected light photography of micrometeorites. I'm still very much a beginner, but I love the microscope for this purpose so far! My issues is that when using my x-y stage control knob, sometimes the stage clip/slide holder mechanism lifts up and allows ...
