Re: Camera FOV area equals eyepiece FOV- Why?

Cool. Yeah, that's worth a shot to try.

Now you got my head buzzing thinking about taking the scope head off and projecting a huge image. :D Something to play around with in the future.

Re: Camera FOV area equals eyepiece FOV- Why?

So...this may be a simple question...but how do I figure out the maximum possible viewable area with only an objective lens of any given magnification (with no eyepiece being used, obviously)? Not a simple question really. You can test it to some extent with wider field eyepieces, but this model ha...

Re: Camera FOV area equals eyepiece FOV- Why?

See I sound like I am starting trouble but my thought is- What is the point of finding out the maximum view? Usually 99 percent of the time you do not need that outer borderline space. And if you would then you switch to a lower objective to pan out a notch or more. Until recently, for the past 5 y...

Re: Calculating monitor magnification- no intermediate lens

Why not using a object-micrometer ? The distance is known and you can measure the distance on the monitor. I have a stage micrometer. I know how to get the FOV. After reading the article in the link of the original post, I was just wondering about total magnification on a computer screen and what i...

Re: Calculating monitor magnification- no intermediate lens

. If you want to ‘get your head around’ this … it’s easier to think in terms of angles of view instead of linear or area magnifications. [Hint] … we don’t usually print a photo at 20” x 16” and then view it from a foot away. MichaelG. . P.S. __ This, from Leica, is probably the most rational explan...

Re: Camera FOV area equals eyepiece FOV- Why?

Not sure I understand the question yet. What would you expect the fovs to be? It might require a little bit of knowledge of the ray path, how the eyepiece picks up the image, and the camera sensor size. My thought/understanding is that the FOV through camera would be smaller than that of eyepieces ...

IMHO, links to the articles by Charles Krebs should be included. They provide first-class explanations of photomicrography. My apology if they are already included in the list.
Great. Thanks for the feedback. I'll look into it!

Re: Camera FOV area equals eyepiece FOV- Why?

Thanks for the reply. However, I'm not wondering about the size of the FOV in terms of measurement. I'm wondering how the area of FOV on a rectangular screen can be roughly equal to that of a circular view when looking through the eyepieces. I was under the impression from my research that a camera ...

Re: Calculating monitor magnification- no intermediate lens

That's because calculating magnification on a monitor is really not very meaningful. As a concept it is pushed by vendors who want to quote magnification numbers that are the next best thing to fraudulent. It is not really used in any other context than marketing. Nice. This is helpful information....

Calculating monitor magnification- no intermediate lens

I tried to calculate the total magnification that I'm viewing on my computer screen with a camera as described in this link: https://www.microscopeworld.com/p-3375-how-to-calculate-microscope-on-screen-magnification.aspx However, I don't think that my calculation was correct. Objective magnification...

Camera FOV area equals eyepiece FOV- Why?

I've done quite a bit of research at this point but simply cannot find the answer to my question. I know it's out there in someone's head that is more experienced than me. I got some help from some community members when trying to find a camera. In the end, with the setup that I chose, with a 40x ob...

Re: How to disable auto brightness adjustments- Olympus OM-D E-M1 Mark II

I could believe Manual mode (M) will work, but as the microscope sets the aperture, I suggested shutter preferred (S) mode. S mode only controls what the camera can, and frees up the other, programmable dial for something else, such as "ASA" or color temperature. But whatever works for you! (ADDEND...

How to disable auto brightness adjustments- Olympus OM-D E-M1 Mark II

I have a new to me Olympus OM-D E-M1 Mark II. When using it to view samples on a computer monitor, if I adjust the brightness of the bulb or open/close the aperature, the camera automatically adjusts the brightness. I want it to NOT do that. I want to be able to adjust brightness on my own so that I...

Re: Mirrorless camera and adapter combination?

I purchased this adapter intended for Nikon microscopes. The photo port on the LW i4 is 38.1 mm so I am hoping that this 38mm to C mount adapter will work. The picture that I took above was with the camera just sitting on top of the photo port but not mounted. https://a.co/d/d8fSrSy I also purchased...

Re: Mirrorless camera and adapter combination?

This is a lot to process. I went with a used Olympus OM-D E M1 Mark II. I got a good deal on it and it seemed like a good option for what I am looking for (I think). Re: Mirrorless camera and adapter combination?

Do either of those provide live HDMI out? The DMC-GX80/GX85 is one of the oldest Panasonic models that has live 4K HDMI and an electronic shutter. A few of us are using that. You will probably want the E-M1's electronic shutter. The mechanical shutters of old µ4/3rds models suffer greater shutter s...

Re: Mirrorless camera and adapter combination?

Yes, that's correct. This is one of the big benefits when using infinity optics: The objective projects an image to infinity. The tube lens corrects (almost) all lens errors of the objective and projects a real image that can directly be taken up by the camera sensor. If you take an mft-camera (13x...

Re: Mirrorless camera and adapter combination?

Sorry...for clarification: I can mount the camera body (without lens) directly to the C mount if I have the correct adapter piece, correct? I'm looking at the Canon EOS M50 (first version). Re: Mirrorless camera and adapter combination?

Thanks for the welcome and for the information. That is a really helpful breakdown. It may not be as complicated as I thought it was. Sounds like sensor size is the main consideration. And the next would be full FOV with vignetting or slightly smaller FOV without.

Hello, I'm new to this forum. I did quite a bit of reading on this particular topic and learned a lot...but am still lost. What a wormhole for someone new to the camera world! I have an LW i4 plan trinocular microscope. I am heavily leaning toward purchasing a mirrorless camera but am lost after tha...
