Re: floaters
I am with Greg Howald , I find floaters way to distracting at high mag, I have trouble detecting movement / motion in the sample from the floaters moving with eyeball activity. So I use a mobile phone camera on the eyepiece and and view using that at high mag, problem solved, though the field of vie...

That could have been you larva friend then! Chironomus sp. = midge fly. from what I saw online.
The larva looks a lot like a mossie wriggler, but then so does the midge and the mosquito.

Variety in a drop
Hi,
I recorded this in September before I cleaned my lens, but that is how long it took for me to find time to finished editing!
Any comments suggestions for improvement welcome, it is only my second video and I see lots of room for improvement!

Re: Vorticella
Hi Microplan, That was interesting, it looked like it was injured at the top end and was restoring the membrane during the video. It had a strange orientation too, I think the stalk was bent near the top and the stalk was foreshortened and positioned under the main body. The quality is fine, but the...

Re: Vorticella
Hi Microplan Nice magnification and detail on the Vorticella. Did you notice at 2:18 that the Vorticella in the background has a damaged stalk and then lets go of it and becomes free-swimming. I didn't know about that, but I read about it here: https://microbewiki.kenyon.edu/index.php/Vorticella Reg...

Re: Video ID for a variety of critters
Thank you Bruce, time for me to do some more reading about these subjects! I actually did see some of these names like "Aspidisca" when doing more looking, but without better footage and experience it is hard to see and learn the identifying features. Fantastic we can benefit from your experience an...

Re: Video ID for a variety of critters
Just realised that number 6 is a Cyanobacteria from one of Microcomos's videos, the other two in shot would be chambered algae. I didn't think they got that large!
And they slide using slime, amazing.

Video is marked Private in YouTube. PS I finally figured out how to post the YouTube videos as embedded rather then a link. I seem to remember you mentioned about it? You use the youtube bcode button above where you write the text, but only include the identifer. So in your case it would be 3eRSSXe7...

Video ID for a variety of critters
Hi all, Working on a video, I like to try and get some labels on the critters we see and learn about them, even if the labels are general ones. I had a go myself in identifying some, see text below, am I in the ballpark? They should be fairly common as they are from my fish tank. HSDkdhQzjG8 1) Oblo...

Re: Not happy with my videos
Thanks everyone for the answers. Things I will attempt based on your advice I will try my best to prepare my sample as best I can. Also, I will play around with my camera settings especially white balance and color profiles. I should also try post processing edits to make it fancier. Lastly, invest...

However she is doing it, the results speak for themselves. I need to learn how to do post editing. Is davinci resolve the best software to use? Apparently it is, I just started using it. Professionals use it, but it free for personal use but limited with fps output and a couple of other things. The...

Re: Not happy with my videos
I know she's not doing any professional editing Depends what you mean by this, but an amateur can get professional results quite easily these days, though it often takes more (a lot for a beginner like me!) time. There is obviously some editing as some of the music is coordinated with the cuts (in ...

Probably more likely. You would have to observe different stages of the activity with multiple organisms in the sample to find out more.

Micro scale explained in Kurzgesagt video
The latest Kurzgesagt (Kourtz-geh-sagt German for shortly said, meaning In a nutshell) in the first few minutes does a good job explaining the scale in the micro world and how it might appear/feel to us. I hadn't realised how think air as well as water was at that scale! Their videos are always very...

I would have to agree with Scarodactyl, as a recent new member, getting someone to figure out how to join might lead to a slow death of the forum, and there are not many places like it. I have also seen several new members join in the couple of months I have been here.

At first glance you would think it's a fungus. Thanks for the nice photos and video. It amazes me that they stretch and maintain such a cell membrane around all of that activity, nothing like it in the macro world. But then again, I guess there is as many orders of magnitude between us and them, as ...

Re: Amoeba attack sequence
Thank you all for your comments. They stimulated me to do some more digging on the question of chemical signals and signal detection. Most of the research is on Dictyostelium (slime mold), a 'social' amoeba that uses chemical signals extensively. That's a special case, however. A few papers dealt w...
