Re: Olympus IMT-2 mystery

The lamp housing that came with my IMT-2 is labeled "LH50A" and says "Replacement Lamp 12 V 50 W HAL". However, it is lacking the umbilical cord that plugs into the microscope body, and instead has a cord that goes to a crude homemade power supply. I suspect that the lamp housing on my IMT-2 is orig...

Re: How to Diy objective parcentering.

apochronaut, Thanks for this very informative post. If I understand your last paragraph, you deduced from position of the image where the shoulder was contacting the nosepiece, and filed that point of the shoulder down about 0.0035 inches (enough to move the contact point about 45 degrees) to move t...

Re: Dichromatic Illumination?

Hi Nubee, What is the function of the 4001 nor gates in your circuit? It looks like IC2a, IC2b, IC3a just invert the 555 output to VR4; IC2c, IC3b just send the (uninverted) 555 output to VR2. Why not just use a single nor-gate inverter to VR4, and tie the 555 output directly to VR2? Or better, wire...

Re: Nikon Alphaphot eyepiece focus ring problem

On mine, the knurled focus ring has three small slotted set screws and what appears to be a socket-head set screw. If you loosen all three slotted set screws (not the socket-head screw), you can pull off the knurled focus ring. Nikon_Alphaphot_diopter.JPG You will then see the focus tube as shown in...

Re: Nikon parts/how to repair fine focus knob?

Hi, I don't recall any trick to getting the focus pinion off the shaft. With the end of the shaft exposed, you should be able to clean any grease off the end of the shaft with Ronsonol or some other solvent, and perhaps get some solvent in between the shaft and the pinion. After you've done this, if...

Re: Zeiss Photomicroscope III condenser carrier spring-pin stuck

My experience with several of these spring pin assemblies from Zeiss Standard condenser carriers is that several hours of soaking in solvent (Ronsonol lighter fluid) or penetrating oil (Kroil) fails to free them up, but then a few minutes of heating with a hot-air heat gun, plus moderate pressure on...

Re: CAN I PUT DIFFERENT OBJECTIVE ON A SCOPE?

Objectives for non-inifinity microscopes are designed to focus the image at one fixed, specified eyepiece distance. Objectives for an infinity system are not designed to bring the image to a focus, but rather to send the light out as parallel rays; an additional lens in the infinity-system microscop...

Re: prism objective

It looks like just a 45 degree prism. I can't imagine a manufacturer mounting just the bare glass, with no protective housing, so perhaps part of the thing is missing. In fact the mount base looks like it could be part of this Nikon centering objective for aligning the epi-fluorescence arc lamp sour...

Re: Nikon parts/how to repair fine focus knob?

Hello, I believe I performed the described steps by just pulling the focus mechanism out as described in my post. I did not need to remove the condensor stage, and did not encounter any loose balls. If your problem with the focus mechanism is just hardened grease, I think you will find it pretty eas...

Re: house fly

Beautiful images! Some of them should be enlarged, framed, and hung on the wall. Makes me reluctant to ever swat one of these intricately engineered beautiful creatures again. Question: in the first image I see a fair amount of dust on the fly, but in the subsequent images everything looks pristine,...

Re: An intriguing freshwater specimen.

I've seen a bunch of what appear to be the same creature (rotifers?) in water from a pond in Wisconsin. Side profile more or less like that of a streamlined turtle. Any idea of the function of the two "crash bars" in the front? Is this a fresh, but dead, specimen? Mine moved quickly enough so I coul...

Andy,

Nice image. Thanks for posting this.

Can you explain in more detail what we are seeing? I see several groups of things that might be flex pivots or springs. Which parts actually move? Where are the capacitive sensors? Are there amplifiers or other electronic processing elements in the image?

Re: Zeiss Phase Contrast Condenser question

Thanks for the suggestions. I just tried holdng a linear polarizer (polarized sunglasses) in front of the two additional annuli, with no noticeable effect from rotating one or the other. So whatever the two annuli are, they apparently don't contain linear polarizers. I'm not sure a condenser with so...

Zeiss Phase Contrast Condenser question

I have a Zeiss Standard with Phase Contrast, which I bought well-used from a university. It has a turret condenser as shown below. Condensor_top_smaller.JPG The condenser turret has seven apertures, labeled J, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, D. J is the iris seen at 6 o'clock in the photo below. Counterclockwise 1, ...

Re: Carl Zeiss Standard 14 advice

Condenser rack: after removing the objectives, binocular head, and condenser (to avoid damage to the optical components) you can turn the microscope upside down and separate the base from the rest of the microscope. then you can remove the condenser rack. There is a stop screw which limits the conde...

Re: Carl Zeiss Standard 14 advice

I have a Standard 14 with a 6V 15 W light which looks the same as that shown in your photos. In my experience 6V gives more light than you will need for normal brightfield illumination. I use a 0 - 7.5 V microscope light power supply rated at 30 VA, made for a different brand of microscope, with an ...

The lamphouse looks very similar to the one shown on page 22-22 of Standard POL and WL POL Microscopes (https://archive.org/details/manual_Zeis ... ion_Manual).

How do you know the power supply needs a new switch? Is it just a switch or combined switch/potentiometer?

Re: FOV size and dimension of objects question

Hello, The eyepiece field of view is 20 mm, which means you can see 20 mm of the intermediate image produced by the objective. With a 100x objective, this 20 mm field of the intermediate image corresponds to (20mm/100) field of the object, i.e. 200 micrometer, not 20 micrometer. So your scale is off...
