Re: New for me: Dendrosoma_radians a Suctoria

Suctoria are ciliates that became sessile and waiting on a prey swimming by.
When a prey (mostly other ciliates) touches the tentacles they are sucked empty.

Today I found a strange tree-like organism.
Determination was not difficult, there is only one I could find.

Here a short video of this organism

Flagellate (Urceolus sabulosus ?) with opposite flagella

A flagellate unknown to me. It looks a bit like Uceolus sabulosus, but it has two flagella and also lives in a house covered with pebbles. However, this species has two oppostie flagella and they are not working together. If the flagella is used at the front, the flagellate moves forward. The flagel...

The rectangular structures are possibly the cells of the desmid: Bambusina borreri (= Bambusina brebissonii)

I think it is Loxophyllum meleagris, with the typical bundeld trichocysts.

Re: What are these small cells ?

Hi jmp,

you could well be right. The sphere is about 100 μm in diameter and the individual cells about 5-8 μm long.

I didn't know about fungus zoospores, but an internet search led me to similar structures.

Thank you for your comment.

What are these small cells ?

Recently seen these strange cells in a sample of fresh water. At first they swam through each other at high speed surrounded by a spherical shell. After a few minutes they began to escape and swam around at the same high speed. Unfortunately I was not able to take a good picture of them. Anyone have...

Re: Unknown Euglena

Thank you Bruce,

First I thought you are joking :)

I continue to find these Euglena species very difficult to identify. They have no fixed shape and the shape keeps changing. No special characteristics either.

Do you perhaps have a book or a web site where I can find them ?

Greetings,

Unknown Euglena

I know it's an Euglena species, a highly metabolic specimen.
The fact that it has no fixed shape always makes identification difficult.

Maybe someone here has an idea what the name is ?

That's why I mainly use BF. Of course DF gives very i...

A few days ago I took a water sample from a pond. In the tube, there seemed to be only black stuff in it. Under the microscope, however, this appeared to be a species new to me ! It was Stentor amethystinus, another new trumpet animal found ! They were present in huge numbers that caused the black c...

Sometimes in a water sample I come across this inconspicuous fellow.
Usually they lie still, but sometimes they swim a short distance and then you see the one flagellum move.
