Re: Local Fossils:

A standard rock crusher or a home made one will not crush the fossil fine enough to use with a transmitted light microscope. Crushed rock or fossils could be viewed quite nicely with a reflected light stereo microscope. To view a crushed specimen with transmitted light, the crushed rock would have t...

Re: Experimentations with high powered LEDs for microscope illumination

I have had a mixed experience with hi-power LEDs for microscope illumination. I am presently on my fourth unit. The previous three have all been returned for credit due to the same problem. When the LED power is increased to maximum or near maximum a Venetian blind effect is visible in the image. I ...

I have a few fossils, not very rare, I am going to grind and polish into thin sections.
Are you planning on making thin sections from some of your collection?

The first one for the grinder is a trilobite.

After the above responses, I tried making a mirrored sphere with flashing lights.
But the closest I could come with short notice is Potassium Ferricyanide, Topas Labs star filter, a few 60's friends and a quick render in Vue Esprit.

Your darkfield condenser is designed to be used only with the 100x obj. If your specimen is properly prepared, the 20w halogen lamp should provide enough illumination. I am in the process of writing and photographing a "How I make thin sections" of domestic rocks.
Not exactly in your topic category, but they are sections. Some thin, some not and some will have to be recovered from the dust bin.

The text must first pass the local editor.

Two thin sections. One a dancer with a boring name, the other a wallflower with a pretty name.

Silicalite sounds so ordinary and Coquina so coquettish. Yet Silicate photographs well and even a Lambda plate does not help Coquina.

Use Microsoft Word 97 , the .DOC format for compatibility and not the newer .DOCX format. It is probably better to insert place holder images in the document and attach the full size photos. The camera does not allow you to see Darkfield illumination, it allows you to see in low light situations.
Darkfield is achieved using special Darkfield stops below or in the condenser.

Ledikite..
Not all that common. There is some disagreement about the name.
A silica mineral of the mica family. Similar to Biotite.
