Re: Wax Oven (Part 1)

I did a very similar conversion to a cheap supermarket mini-oven around 5 years ago. Still works a treat. I used a 100mm long K-type stainless thermocouple as a sensor. To locate it I just drilled a 7mm hole through the thin steel oven wall and used the M8 thread on the collar of the thermocouple to...

Re: A discussion about experience

Are you sure that unconsciousness is not experienced while unconscious? While it would seem to be the case, you cannot prove it to be the case, see also 'Popper's falsification'.

Re: A discussion about experience

These are big questions. My unpleasantness: To experience anything, one needs to be conscious. Is consciousness a matter of neurochemistry? If so, what distinguishes one individual from another? Is there such an entity as a soul? Is such a soul an electrochemical phenomenon? Or could we imagine tha...

Re: Culture medium for specific bacteria

Sorry- I misread your post. McConkey agar is for urinary bacterial culture. As were my comments about flagellate bacteria If you want to grow typical probiotic bacteria then full-cream milk is a start - providing you have a source of the bacteria you want. I am sure you can find YT videos about maki...

Re: Culture medium for specific bacteria

I have been out of the Bacteriology business for a long time, but McConkey Agar comes to mind If you look at a fresh sample you might also see flagellates like E.Coli and Proteus Mirababilis. But it sounds like a case for antbiotics. https://www.sigmaaldrich.com/GB/en/product/sial/70143?gclid=EAIaIQ...

Re: My Epiphot TME.

The scope arrived yesterday. A bit dusty but considering this has been a university scope for many years, remarkably scratch-free. The lamp house if missing from the illuminated base-platen and the business end of the top-light as can be seen in to photo. But I have ordered a couple more of the LEDs...

Re: My Epiphot TME.

Thank you @PeteM. I scraped this off Ebay for just under £50 delivered, and have all the parts to rebuild the light. I might fix up the 3rd party illuminated base - I can make a new platen to fill the hole and replace the damaged mirror easily enough. So if something comes up in the way of a trinocu...

Re: My Epiphot TME.

These little white LED's from EBay UK - alleged to be 15W and cost around 15 are dimmable on my system, and give light good enough for transmitted light work even using a 100x objective. https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/385733414862

Re: My Epiphot TME.

Was that ground glass useless as a viewing option? Was it not useful for showing others what you were looking at? Absolutely useless unless you are in a a darkened room with a relatively brightly lit FOV coming from the objective. The original function of the gg screen was to (in near-darkroom cond...

Re: My Epiphot TME.

Hi. I have a nice little 6" monitor that will just fit the space where the old large format film-back is, just waiting for a 12V power plug -and trying to work out the least invasive way to dix it in place. I can probably actually fix it to the (replaced with black ABS) screen of the film holder its...

My Epiphot TME.

I purchased my Epiphot TME (an early version of the Epiphot 300) via Ebay a few months back. It needed some work as it had been in storage for a long time - though in a very nice flight-case. Apart from cleaning I stripped out all the on-board electronics and replaced them with a more modern system,...

Re: Broke my diffusion filter - need help figuring out what to do

You can frost most types of glass (borosilicate/Pyrex/ common soda glass) using sodium hydroxide solution. Cold and weak it takes a while, but at 0.2M solution strength (look it up) and a temperature of 20-30 C overnight is usually enough. The interesting thing about this method is that the surface ...
