Re: First try at depth stacking. Clover stamen.

Hi again Glen, I made a quick and easy water-mount that you may like a quick look at - It may be a good way to start for you to try.. Here's the post http://www.microbehunter.com/microscopy-forum/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=2924 Hope it may help get you going old chap. :) Hi.. Just saw your post. Nice! I d...

Re: First try at depth stacking. Clover stamen.

Yes. I totally get your reasoning. I've skipped a couple of basic steps here :-) coming from astro photography I am a bit eager on image capture and processing - just a part of the e whole :-)

First try at depth stacking. Clover stamen.

Hi, This is my first try at depth stacking. It's the stamen of a clover species that flowers early here in Norway. I used my DIY dark field filter and took photos in 4 layers. I did a 11 image stack for each layer, processed in Photomatix, before I combined them in Helicon Focus. What I learned this...

Re: Pollen of coltsfoot (Tussilago farfara)

Well, I was wrong. My Row Rathenow 1960-ish EP projects a larger image on the sensor than the original 10x ones. Not sure if it is actually more data, just the same image as with the 10x, but enlarged...

Re: Pollen of coltsfoot (Tussilago farfara)

Good progress. As one who did a good deal of afocal imaging with a Nexus 6 (not 6p) phone, a couple of observations for you to consider. First, it looks to me like your phone may be too close or too far from the eyepiece. You are using a very small part of the sensor and sacrificing a good deal of ...

Re: Pollen of coltsfoot (Tussilago farfara)

So, after taking 7 RAW shots with my Nexus 6P @ ISO 100 and auto shutter, I took 11 new "empty" shots with no slide, and at the same ISO. Both the "flat frame" and light frame were averaged in photomatix. Does this technique have a name? It is very common with DSLR astro photography where you get u...

Re: Pollen of coltsfoot (Tussilago farfara)

I finally have an adapter for my Nexus 6P now, making things a lot easier. I purchased a Gosky Universal Cell Phone Adapter Mount. (http://www.amazon.com/Gosky-Universal-Phone-Adapter-Mount/dp/B013D2ULO6). The only problem with it is that the Nexus has the power button and volume buttons right where...

Re: Greetings from Norway!

Hi Glenn, I have never heard of that brand, but it looks pretty straight forward in design... It does look to be high quality German build... It is certainly worth more than you paid.. The operation would be very standard and common with other stands.. You can always take photos "afocal".. Through ...

Eye pieces for projection

I have three, all rather odd maybe, options for EP projection photography. I own only older microscope and have the following to choose from; - Reichert Austria 8x vintage, pre-1940 - 10x EP that is included with me microscope (1940ish) - Unknown origin and magnification ROW Rathenows (later Zeiss) ...

Re: Pollen of coltsfoot (Tussilago farfara)

Very interesting subject. You have some spots of tantalizing sharpness in there which would suggest a focus stack might be a good way to attack this subject. There is always a struggle with depth of focus in photomicrography which is not a big consideration in Astrophotography. You can manage it to...

Pollen of coltsfoot (Tussilago farfara)

Hi, This is my second attempt at darkfield. I extracted some coltsfoot pollen by cutting a flower off and leaving it on a glass, head down, for about half an hour. Coltsfoot has evolved into an "early bloomer", to avoid competition for pollen-bearing insects in early spring. I did a hand-held "burst...

Re: First real microscope

This a very fine looking microscope and I am happy it was just a lubricant issue. I have several examples of Wetzlar-O objectives, which seem patterned after Leitz objectives of the same era as well as being physicaly similar to objectives labelled Seibert. It seems Seibert, a bit of a genius optic...

Re: Paramecia in polarized light

That is very cool indeed. Can you tell me a little more about what kind of filter you used and where you placed them? I want to sacrifice a couple of 3D glasses for an experiment like this. I can put one piece in my pre-condenser filter holder, and the other one in one of the Eyepieces maybe?

Dark Field #1

I did a very simple DIY dark field experiment today. I just cut a circular, coin size, shape out of black cardboard. I put it on top of my white diffuser filter that sits between lamp and condenser. I am not sure if this qualifies as a "true" dark field effect, but I sure got the contrast increase. ...

Re: First real microscope

Just out of curiosity: are the eyepiece tubes of the parallel type? I am used to converging eyepiece tubes on my Spencers and have never had a problem merging the images. But I remember I had a bit of difficulty accommodating when first trying a scope with parallel tubes. It seems as though one has...

Filter between lamp and condenser - and dark field question

Hi, I am getting to know my second hand and recently purchased microscope better and better. It has a mechanism for placing a filter between the lamp and iris/diaphragm. Hi my name is Glenn, and I just arrived .-) I just bought my first "advanced" microscope off a local classifieds site for 70 USD. My Carl Zeiss Jena Stativ VA from 1910 (ish)

Here is my super cool Vintage Carl Zeiss Jena "Stativ VA" https://goo.gl/photos/VWxPJqXYDNmpzW5n6 It was designed for low power objectives, and allows then to pass through the stage. The condenser is removable and there is a ring that can be removed to make the opening in the stage larger. I tried t...

Re: First real microscope

Well, Here is my breakfast table this morning; To get to the focuser knob, I had to do a 100% disassembly. It was probably rust, or old lubricant that was the culprit. It dissolved quickly with a generous spray of WD-40. I also had to spray the condenser height knob. https://lh3.googleusercontent.com...

First real microscope

Hi, I just bought a second-hand microscope and have run into some problems. The stage will not move when I use the large knobs. I have never used a stereo microscope before, but I assume the large knobs are supposed to move the stage up and down. I can't see a stage lock, if such a thing exists. Pic...
