Re: Budget Friendly BH2 Video?

No, actually. I won't modify my photography systems to take pictures for you. And I have no inclination to check or comment on your math. I've explained what I use and why. Asking me to do testing for you so you can figure out why your math is confusing or misleading you is unreasonable, and not som...

Re: Olympus eyepiece markings?

The + inside a circle should mean there is a crosshair reticle in place. These are mostly used on polarizing microscopes and generally cost somewhat more than an eyepiece without the reticle as they are relatively rare. They are also handy if you are trying to collimate the eyepieces in a binocular ...

Re: Budget Friendly BH2 Video?

The bottom line is that you need an image circle at the sensor that is large enough to enclose the entire area of the sensor that is used to capture the image. If it's smaller, you get vignetting. You really have very few reasonable choices as to how to get there. You are limited to the available pr...

Re: Budget Friendly BH2 Video?

A mag changer can help with photographic framing. You can actually do the same thing with different projection eyepiece magnifications too. I originally got one to help with framing specimens for outreach demonstrations, so the kids didn't have to search so much for what I was trying to show them. A...

Re: Budget Friendly BH2 Video?

I think using a calibration slide is the only way to get accurate dimensional information for scale bars. Basically, Photograph the calibration slide with the objectives you intend to use (or all of them to be complete) with the same camera and projection setup you will use with the specimens. If yo...

Re: Budget Friendly BH2 Video?

I recommended the GH4 because I've had one since they were new, and I know it works well in this application. It's also pretty cheap (used) right now. Origianally it was recommended to me by a microscopy/photography professor friend. The GH5 is newer, same sensor and mount, but probably ~$1500. I kn...

Re: Budget Friendly BH2 Video?

Easily done. Panasonic GH4 (~$500-600 used), M4/3 to C-mount adapter(~$10, Fotodiox, Fotasy, etc.), NFK 3.3x (~$50-75), U-PMTVC 0.3x C-mount to microscope adapter (~$100-125). The combination of the 3.3x and 0.3x is close to 1x, so you have essentially direct projection, with the color correction ne...

Re: Slide storage drawer cabinets. BAD IDEA!

Those are designed for long-term storage of pathology slides, and for that they work very well. They're very compact for the number of slides they contain. Sliding stops or even foam blocks, are used to keep the slides vertical. Small cards can delineate time, or specimen number ranges. Modern mount...

Anton, I personally think that particular microscope is a good deal. Synchrostream has been around a long time and sells quite a few microscopes and parts. They offer a 30 day return, and free shipping. Properly packaged shipping's about $100 by itself. It's not the cheapest, but it's well within yo...

Floaters are inside your eye. There is nothing you can put in your eyes that will get rid of them. The best option is to learn to ignore them. If they're bad, the next best option is laser vitriolysis, where a YAG laser is used by an ophthalmologist to disrupt them as much as possible. There are fou...

Maryfox, As you have found out, basic microscopy with low magnifications and relatively low expectations is pretty easy. Once you start up the slope wanting more, it gets a lot more complicated. Actually, using that microscope, I think your best bet is to use your cell phone. It's much easier than it sounds. They can certainly shoot 1080p and probably shoot 4k video if you would like. They can also be wired to an external monitor as well. You'll get to see on your screen everything your eye...

PeteM is right. My vote is for the Olympus BX series. I was a clinical lab supervisor in the second busiest trauma center in California for a long time. In 1999, when we built a new hospital, we switched from AO's and Olympus BH-2s, to Olympus BX-40's in the clinical lab (micro, UA, and hematology)....

I suppose I'm lucky in that my career was spent generally in the detection and identification of pathogens in clinical labs. Antartica, From a practical point of view, having nicer objectives serves no purpose unless, and until, you need them. Filters can just drop in on top of the light port. No extra holder is necessary. The little filter holder that goes in the front of the lamp house holds the same size filters. I prefer dropping them in on the light port on the occasions where I use one not included in a condenser. If you feel like s...
