Re: Olympus CX23 Review
If you are right, and Olympus wants to prevent usage of these relatively inexpensive and well-performing objectives on clinical scopes, why didn't that apply the same treatment to 10x and 40x objectives? Can you think of a reason why the 4x and the 100x would need to be shorter relative nose->stage...

Re: Olympus CX23 Review
Why do the CX objectives have optical parts that go into the nose? Is this on purpose to keep people from using the E Plans on non-student scopes or is there a technical reason?

Update: replaced with a Nikon E-Plan 40x (top black bottom silver with knurl in the center). Included is the result. Note that the bending of the lines do not appear in the eye-pieces, it seems to be something my iPhone camera is doing.

Re: A potential Game-Changer
A huge ciliate ( Spirostomium species, Stentor species...etc.) I sense from apo's global 5 mp camera link...can not be 'live stiched'...the microscopist has to peruse the lengths of these behemoths, as they move about..'live stiching' in the link seems only good for non-moving targets ( the link di...

Re: Olympus E A40 0.65 160 Objective Haze
With a drop of Cargille Immersion Oil Type B directly on slide and coverslip on top. Looks sharper, at least. Still not great contrast but I'm not sure what is expected for that objective. The different colors of the chromatic aberration on the left and right sides of the image (more red and cyan o...

Re: Olympus E A40 0.65 160 Objective Haze
The immersion oil is just in some way refracting the rays so they cancel out what is an obvious problem with spherical aberration internally. Why would a 40X .65 objective improve when immersion oil is used? The skewed c.a. is evident in photos of the scale with the other objectives too. It's a coc...

Re: Olympus E A40 0.65 160 Objective Haze
40X 0.65 should give a pretty bad (but maybe not that bad) image if used with no cover glass. Might be worth sticking a 0.17 mm cover glass on top of the micrometer slide with a small drop of immersion oil to get an idea how much of the haze is from the objective itself vs. lack of cover glass. Wit...

Re: Olympus E A40 0.65 160 Objective Haze
I'd consider this an opportunity to get a 40x Olympus DPlan objective. 40x is one of the most challenging magnifications (compared to 10x and 20x), and the DPlan is a significantly better, but still affordable, objective. As Phil said, this may have oil intrusion. Olympus' educational achromat obje...

Re: Olympus E A40 0.65 160 Objective Haze
First, you can confirm whether it has a damaged cement layer by looking into the objective with a stereo microscope or by using a reversed eyepiece as a strong hand magnifier. With a backlit source such as a clear window, focus on the clean front lens surface and then slowly through the lens pack t...

Re: Olympus E A40 0.65 160 Objective Haze
This is the kind of fuzzy image that can happen with a small amount of of some substance inside scattering the light : lens separation or even oil invasion. Oil leaks in oil immersion objectives are usually more severe and result in different distortions due to repeated dipping and therefore much o...

Olympus E A40 0.65 160 Objective Haze
I have a weird haze on my Olympus A E40 0.65 objective. It came with the CH2 that I bought used. I thought it was a depth-of-field issue until I got the stage micrometer and realized it is ridiculous. Here are pictures from all of my objectives, straightened and cropped from an iPhone 6 with a 12.5x...

Thanks all. Barring any new advice I think the best is to stick with what I have for now. I am in the beginning stage and 'gear-itis' is a tough malady to stand firm against.

Are 60x objectives worth it?
I want a bit more than 40x but don't want to deal with oil immersion. I notice 60x objectives are available but seem on the expensive side. I am currently using 4x, 10x, 20x, and 40x to look at live water critters. Would I get any real benefit to removing one of those and adding a 60x?

Re: How do I fix slide holder wobble on CH-2 mechanical stage (CH-MVR)?
No, it shouldn't be over your head. Take your time, maybe take pictures so you know where things go as you take it apart. Know that Olympus uses JIS screws. They look like Phillips but are not. JIS fit a lot better than Phillips. I use these: https://www.amazon.com/Hozan-JIS-4-JIS-Screwdriver-3rd/d...

How do I fix slide holder wobble on CH-2 mechanical stage (CH-MVR)?
I have a CH-2 with mechanical stage CH-MVR. I got it used and it has been (and is) pretty much fine. However there is a slight wobble / gap in the stage where it holds the slide. See pictures and video. Can anyone help me get started adjusting this so that it is minimized? Failing that, if this is n...

My reversible LED conversion of Olympus CH2 with home-made driver
Hey, I thought someone might be interested in the write-up of my conversion of an Olympus CH2 (CHT) from the stock lamp to an LED with a driver. I am new to Microscopy but somewhat experienced in DIY electronics stuff. I used a warm white (3000K) Cree XML2 (3000mA rated) CRI 80 LED mounted on a heat...
