If you are right, and Olympus wants to prevent usage of these relatively inexpensive and well-performing objectives on clinical scopes, why didn't that apply the same treatment to 10x and 40x objectives? Can you think of a reason why the 4x and the 100x would need to be shorter relative nose->stage...

Why do the CX objectives have optical parts that go into the nose? Is this on purpose to keep people from using the E Plans on non-student scopes or is there a technical reason?

Update: replaced with a Nikon E-Plan 40x (top black bottom silver with knurl in the center). Included is the result. Note that the bending of the lines do not appear in the eye-pieces, it seems to be something my iPhone camera is doing.

40X 0.65 should give a pretty bad (but maybe not that bad) image if used with no cover glass. Might be worth sticking a 0.17 mm cover glass on top of the micrometer slide with a small drop of immersion oil to get an idea how much of the haze is from the objective itself vs. lack of cover glass. That is from the camera on the phone. I cropped the other ones more.

Thanks all. Barring any new advice I think the best is to stick with what I have for now. I am in the beginning stage and 'gear-itis' is a tough malady to stand firm against.

I want a bit more than 40x but don't want to deal with oil immersion. I notice 60x objectives are available but seem on the expensive side. I am currently using 4x, 10x, 20x, and 40x to look at live water critters. Would I get any real benefit to removing one of those and adding a 60x?

No, it shouldn't be over your head. Take your time, maybe take pictures so you know where things go as you take it apart. Know that Olympus uses JIS screws. They look like Phillips but are not.
