Re: help id a ciliate
ahh so my original thoughts were correct. this culture was full of spirostomum. I had a hunch it looked similar. I noticed when I tapped the microscope there was no "twitch" reaction. so I'm assuming the cellular damage probably affected the mechanisms involving calcium channels (if I remember corre...

help id a ciliate
I found this specimen in a fresh water source that i sample often. It's quite small in comparison to say a paramecium. I toggle between 40X and 60x objectives. the first thing I noticed about it was the strange geometric hard lines that make up the cell. You can skip to different parts of the video ...

Unfortunately we had alot of rain the past few days. I'll let it have some time to grow and see if I can't get images. Only thing in the culture I can find is crypomonads and bacterium.

Re: Kinda freaked out
Just to clarify there was certainly a high density of bacteria. Maybe I can take better images since I got a new scope. These were actually taken from plaques/films that were sitting on top of the water.

Re: Kinda freaked out
It's really interesting because it looks as though the amoebas and bacteria are one giant mass. The way I made this was I had an old succulent stem and some valentines flowers that were going bad, I put them in the flowers vase and set it outside. Maybe 3 weeks. I live in TN USA, and it got kinda wa...

Looking at the pictures I suppose there are some slight differences. I think these were probably both made around the same time by the same china manufacturers and then different companies slapped their names on them and sold em

Sadly the light went out on this scope and I can't get it to work. I even found the exact bulb. I just bought the swift and I'm glad I did because it...

These appeared after a few days. I made a water sample by adding some moss to it to see if any protist would grown in it. They are quite small and very fast!

I found a "worm"? Moving around inside of something. But the thing I need help identifying is the little organism that looks like a clear orb with two micronucleus. You can't see this in the video but it was completely covered in cillia like structures around the entire circumference of its body. ht...
