Re: Oxidation on front assembly / retraction stopper
Anhydrous Ethyl Alcohol. U.S.P. + 432526. and yes, the coatings may have been imperfectly deposited but who would suspect that at the outset. Previously I.P.A. was probably the strongest solvent I had used on them with no effect. Ethanol speckled them immediately. Henceforward I use nothing stronge...

Re: Oxidation on front assembly / retraction stopper
Are you sure that was ethanol (ethyl alcohol)? not methanol or isopropyl alcohol or denatured alcohol? Most (if not all) dedicated optical cleaning solutions use ethanol, even Olympus Hyperclean 3310 (which is for cleaning microscope lenses) mainly consists of ethyl alcohol: http://file.yizimg.com/2...

Re: Oxidation on front assembly / retraction stopper
Thank you for your advice! I was hoping there would be some miracle magic solution but it's probably best to either leave it alone in that case. No reason to endanger that lens (unless it becomes a visible problem later down the road). As for ethanol - so far it's always worked really well with mode...

Re: GF Planachromat infinity optics for Jenamed microscope
Hello, So I finally bought the complete set from the same seller (sadly, no 100x oil in the set) and I got a weird objective. The one on the left: jena GF planachromat.jpg No infinity symbol on it: 1 x 0,03 spez/-A I tried it with the same setup than other objectives but I don't have any image. Any...

Oxidation on front assembly / retraction stopper
Hello! Today I received a Zeiss GF Planachromat 12,5x 0.25 with really nice optics. It was very dirty and I knew the front assembly has some noticeably oxidation - the dirt came of quite well but the oxidation remains: https://i.imgur.com/31AvV8f.jpeg Is there anything I can do to remove that layer ...

Re: (Pseudoophonus) griseus?
Thank you - I'm sort of still working on that, the bottom side proved to be in worse condition (the pinning needle had started to corrode and stain the carapace greenish-blue) but I should have a decent enough "portrait" by tomorrow.

Re: Otiorhynchus armadillo
Hi, Mitutoyo 5x with DCR 250 at 11.5cm - not as good/sharp/CA free as the LAOWA but pretty good result! very interesting! Have you already read Robert's tests? https://www.closeuphotography.com/macro-lenses It could be close to Laowa 100mm 2X, I think. Best, ADi It's probably even a bit better beca...

Re: A spider
The 1:1 photo is very impressive!
A pretty substantial spider for Central Europe, to me it definitely looks like a Zoropsis spinimana, not Tegenaria domestica - the black stripe on the Opisthosoma and the skull-like shape on the Prosoma/Cephalothorax are very typical, as is the size.

Re: ascorbic acid (polarised)
Your crystal growing regime is infested with too many nucleation points, assuming that you are trying to grow large individual crystals and not a forest of dendrites. Your slide surface could be dusty, or scratched, or awash with small surface defects. Your growth solution could also be contaminate...

Re: Reichert Polyvar
No idea what that red lever does though. Isn't that for adjusting the parfocality? So that the focus is on the same plane when you look through the eyepiece and the camera? That would be logical and actually a great feature! Hopefully you are right :) It would make sense as that's a camera specific...

Depending on what you need...or rather want - and how much money you can spend... between 1 and infinity. I once bought a used record player from a guy and his whole flat was full of various record players. He explained it like this: "I have the first one I bought and then I upgraded to another one....

Re: Tips for sharpening pictures taken using a dslr.
While a Plan objective can be an advantage in certain situations, you will still have to stack images unless you're only dealing with very flat subjects like thin slices, microsections etc. So I would suggest you start with small manual stacks and use either free software to stack the images or a tr...

Re: an old article about using film scanners to scan slides
Yes, of course! That was one of many reasons why I grabbed it hehe :-D I'm glad I did - I've scanned a few old photos yesterday, the quality is really quite amazing - and once I'm done with that I'm going to take the lens out and use it for photography. I've actually thought about using it on my mic...

an old article about using film scanners to scan slides
Today I purchased the film scanner the author is using and while researching it, I stumbled upon this article: http://www.microscopy-uk.org.uk/mag/indexmag.html?http://www.microscopy-uk.org.uk/mag/artmay05/dwminolta.html I think this is a very ingenious idea, though at this day and age with todays c...

Re: Stereo-Microscope for Entomology on a Budget
It's called "STM45b" from the "Lacerta" brand - as I said, it's very similar to the scopes that are available from other brands - but the build quality and price are both just right - that is for the one demo scope I tried in the shop. It looks like the SWIFT S7 BL head https://us.swiftmicroscopes.c...
