Re: Silicon-on-sapphire
This is all pretty cool. Plus, doing doubly immersed optical minerology with 100x objectives is kind of a PITA. So, is the substrate quartz on sapphire or just sapphire? And what's the purpose of printing an IC on sapphire vs. say, GaS., or basic Si? I suspect that, based on the (barely visible) 4t...

If I understand you, I have other ones that aren't in such good condition- most of the circuitry 'washed' off- and I used one of those.

Thanks!
No, I don't prepare these myself. I did send out some mineral specimens to a commercial entity (Vancouver Petrographics), but these above were made by a member of the faculty at the Geological Institute in Amsterdam in the 1960s and 1970s.

No, what you see is all there is. I don't think it's a process limitation- all they needed to do was add another row at the top and they would have had an actual 50-state US flag.....

This series examines a small chip from National Semiconductor, a LM3402, fabricated in 2004. I tried a few new techniques with this series. Here's the 1:1 reproduction: DSC_3298.jpg The chip is barely visible. One new thing I tried is the mounting method- taking a cue from the diatomists, I glued th...

That 80x epi DIC shot is really quite good! You gotta be getting close to theoretical max resolution for that lens/camera system.
