Re: Silicon-on-sapphire

This is all pretty cool. Plus, doing doubly immersed optical minerology with 100x objectives is kind of a PITA. So, is the substrate quartz on sapphire or just sapphire? And what's the purpose of printing an IC on sapphire vs. say, GaS., or basic Si? I suspect that, based on the (barely visible) 4t...

Where did you find exposed substrate?
If I understand you, I have other ones that aren't in such good condition- most of the circuitry 'washed' off- and I used one of those.

I was able to reproduce a few images appearing in: Verschure, R. Thanks!

No, I don't prepare these myself. I did send out some mineral specimens to a commercial entity (Vancouver Petrographics), but these above were made by a member of the faculty at the Geological Institute in Amsterdam in the 1960s and 1970s.

No, what you see is all there is. I don't think it's a process limitation- all they needed to do was add another row at the top and they would have had an actual 50-state US flag.....

Decapping and imaging chips is a not uncommon hobby/thing. If he put his name on it, its unlikely he wasn't expecting others to find and/or post about it.

Regardless, amazing series of images. Well done!
