It's not a rotifer. It's a vaginicolid ciliate (Vaginicola, Cothurnia, etc.). We don't see the base of the base of the lorica, so I'm hesitant to propose a genus-level identification.

Ange20, not all condensers/ setups can do darkfield with a patchstop with a 40x objective... so dont panic (achieving this is often more of a 'sport' than a routine method) I think is the alignment of the objective?? It's the 23mm type as fitted to Labophot era CF. My best guess is some optimising was done. Light path alignment is dictated by the condenser to iris, field lens doesn't have much adjustment either.
